not so sure the dutch league would be preferable over an english league tbh. That wouldn't help in telling us if they could handle making the step up to our first team in the prem, i mean look at deulofeu, he'd look brilliant in the dutch league, but he's not good enough for the premier league, and that's not because he's not talented enough.

I agree with you about the Dutch League not saying anything about making it in the PL, but certainly with Dowell it's about just getting a chance to show that he has got that professional 'something' to give him that chance at the top level. Both of them have a queue of top-level players in front of them here as well as competition at their current age and level. Would you take Barkley out of the team for Dowell (the last match, OK, that's football)? Davies? Mirallas? Lookman and Calvert-Lewin are also seen to be deserving of the few chances that crop up for youth as a wide attacking/advanced midfield player.

With Walsh, you are talking about Gana, Davies (again), Schneiderlin, Barry, McCarthy and now Besic. Plus Joe Williams fighting for that spot. Plus potentially monkeying around with formations and finding spaces for Holgate, Kenny, Garbutt, Connolly and Galloway

You could argue that Deulofeu is a perfect example, since he was loaned out to England before he got his chances to 'make it' with Sevilla, us and now Milan. He didn't show enough to shove aside the competition at Barcelona so this was the solution found for him.

The Dutch league is useful to hone your technical ability but that's about it & neither Walsh nor Dowell need that part of their game working on. Championship loan or first team exposure.

...Walsh was a major success at Yeovil, I don't feel he's got much to prove and I would imagine there are plenty of suitors who want him on a permanent deal. I wouldn't be surprised if he's equally keen to move on.

Dowell on the other hand has not really experienced competitive open-age football. His situation is different and you don't really know if they can cope until they are exposed at that level.

His work rate and impact on the pitch through 90 minutes isn't comparable. Would have to work a lot harder to get a chance when things were still at stake in the season. I suspect now it's likely we'll finish 7th he might get a game.

Does confuse me also though as he was brilliant vs Norwich last season.

..he's a class act, Matey. The only assumption I have is that he's not a RK type and doesn't fit the way he wants his team to play. Dowell is quite languid and can appear to go missing in games, he's not the high energy type that Koeman seems to want. What surprises me is that he's not been out on loan to see if he can cope with the competitive nature of open age footy. Dowell has got good size about him so you would think he'd be physically fine.

You know Yeovil were in League 2 last season? Bit different to the Championship in terms of quality and midfield battles.

..it is but I suggest a major factor in a loan deal is whether a youngster can cope with the demands of truly competitive open age football. Walsh not only coped with the physicality and demands of winning points, he was also Yeovil's best footballer.

You might be right, he could go on loan again at a higher level but I have my doubts that the player will be keen on that.

You might be right, he could go on loan again at a higher level but I have my doubts that the player will be keen on that.

He also had the pressure of joining a team in the relegation zone. And helped them get out of it comfortably. He will be a premiership footballer in the future.

Re this part. I'm hoping McCarthy will be sold. Then potentially the likes of Walsh and/or Williams could be competing with Besic and Barry for the other CM slots. Barry will be a year older and won't be able to play much, and we'll have the Europa League to contend with too, so they have a chance I think.

agree with this, mccarthy will be sold, barry will barely start a game next season (in the league anyway) and besic cant be relied upon.
