MATCH REPORT VIA CITY FOR U18S GAME

In lovely mid-September sunshine, City got off to the perfect start

Electric-paced Borges chased an overhit pass but pressurised Everton keeper Zan-Luk Leban as he collected then dropped the ball at the Portuguese winger’s feet allowing him to walk the ball into the empty net.

It was Borges third goal of the season and the 16 year-old looks a real prospect.

Everton gradually settled into the task and on 23 minutes, Sean McAllister raced on to a headed back pass by skipper Kwaku Oduroh to prod the ball past Mikki Van Sas.

City responded well and almost regained the lead just before the halfway mark as Darko Gyabi sent Borges clear on the left and his cross was volleyed goalwards by Lewis Hamilton only for Leban to save well.

But a foul in the box on 33 minutes gave Toffees striker Tom Cannon the chance to put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot and he made no mistake, sending Van Sas the wrong way.

With Everton in the ascendency, City struck back on the stroke of half-time as Harvey Griffiths laid the ball on for Sodje who made no mistake to end a difficult half for the hosts on a high.

City pressed for a third from the restart and Griffiths looked to have had a decent shout for a penalty after being clattered in the box by the Everton keeper, but the referee wasn't interested.

Moments later, Sodje's weaving run saw the ball break free to Griffiths who saw his powerful low shot whistle past the post.

Then, just before the hour, Micah Hamilton danced around the Toffees' right-back before cutting in from the left and drilling a low shot that Leban saved well with his feet.

With tackles flying in from both sides, it was turning into a bruising encounter that saw both Griffiths and Hamilton limp off injured.

The Everton goal was leading a charmed life with Gyabi in particular seeing a number of shots saved or scrambled clear.

But there were to be no further goals, despite City's admirable second half efforts.

Everton Under-18s boss Paul Tait saluted his team’s impressive all-round performance after the young Blues drew 2-2 at reigning U18 Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday.

After City took an early lead through Carlos Borges, midfielder Sean McAllister's accomplished finish levelled the scores on 22 minutes.

Toffees striker Tom Cannon won and converted a penalty 33 minutes in but City hit back on the stroke of half-time through Tai Sodje.

Neither side were able to strike a decisive blow in the second half, with the draw meaning Everton have taken four points from their opening two matches of the season.

The Blues kicked off the campaign with a 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers last weekend.

“To go toe-to-toe with City was very pleasing,” Under-18s boss Tait told evertonfc.com.

“They are best team we play – that’s been the case for the last three seasons, since I’ve been in this job.

“We conceded early on but turned the game on its head. Sean scored a really good goal, driving forward like he does.

“Then Tom won a penalty and slotted it away.

“We were in total control of the game and could have had a third or fourth. But we shot ourselves in the foot trying to play out from the back just before half-time, and they capitalised on a mistake to make it 2-2.

“I’m absolutely delighted with the performance.

“It sounds strange because we conceded two goals but our defensive shape was different class.

“We were very organised and it was really pleasing to see the players organising themselves. Individual errors cost us the goals.

“In possession we were lively, forward-thinking and especially good in transitions.

“More than anything, the desire and will to try to win the game was really pleasing – the boys gave everything.”

Northern Ireland youth international McAllister was on the scoresheet for the second successive match.

The 17-year-old signed a first professional contract with Everton during the summer and boss Tait revealed the youngster’s development has been very pleasing.

“Sean has done terrific,” he said.

“He is a talented boy and an honest boy, who is prepared to work really hard. He’s all-action.

“He can score goals and is a really dynamic midfield player."

That’s a great result, Tait will be pleased with that . Team is getting settled too just Kayoute out Whitaker in from last weeks start. That looked a strong City team too , Tommy Doyle is Mike Doyles son and has featured in their first team squad, I thought he was too old for this level now, maybe not. Gyabi has been featuring in England youth squads in recent years and is held in high regard. I think Delap has moved up to their U23s now, the result was obviously a great improvement from that defeat in the friendly.
