The defence, mostly Kenny and Holgate, were unfathomably poor. But our wide play was pretty good and we did create quite a lot of chances just unfortunately let down big time by Tosun and Niasse not being able to convert them.
Digne was having to play full-back and winger because DCL is not a winger or wide-forward and was completely ineffectual unless he drifted more centrally. This is why Digne was caught so far up the pitch for the opening goal. Put in a few good crosses too. For that he gets my motm.
Zouma could have done a bit better for the second goal but it was our right side where West Ham were able to cut through time after time. Kenny and Holgate simply weren't able to handle Anderson. Gueye, too.
I don't feel the crushing sense of humiliation I felt last season when we lost to Burnley at home. There was some good play from us but we were let down by abysmal performances from a couple individuals.
Holgate and Tosun were shocking. Niasse and Kenny nearly as bad.

This. Digne is class. DCL is not, nor never will be, a winger. Anderson toyed with Kenny. Kenny and Holgate boys against men.

We need Richarlison back quickly

I was going to go for Walcott initially but changed my mind to Digne who was the most attacking threat, at least in the first half. What is worrying is the amount of space Everton seem to give the opposition who can seemingly find a pass with ease against very little pressing.

On the bright side we didn't concede from a corner......................................................................................

Cheers Andy, the poll is spot on,Bernard will add a great deal to us this season,I'm not doom and gloom tonight, when we eventually have the five new fellas available and firing I am certain we will look a hell of a lot better, it's a "mix and match" with us currently.

Abysmal performance that.

He needs time but Silva has started with the annoying trait of our last few managers of two holding midfielders and a striker playing on the wing when ill suited to the role - hopefully this is just to fitness issues within the squad as it is doing neither the side or player, DCL, any favours. The defence seems all over the place, zonal marking not to blame today, the opposition seems to walk through us at times.

There is a meekness within the squad and club that needs to be ridden away with. We'll achieve nothing of note until it is.

I thought Walcott looked dangerous and was surprised when he went off, Bernard showed flashes of his ability and I went with Digne as MOTM. Not many others impressed.

To finish on a positive after a game where there was little to be seen, Richarlison, Digne and Bernard all look the part so maybe the recruitment side of the club is finally moving in the right direction. Hopefully Mina and Gomes will follow suit.

Some of these WH players were ressies not far back and we made them look a class above in all areas of the pitch.

Without Richy, we looked as turgid as we have done for the last 2 years.
A win, a loss and 3 draws without playing against quality opposition yet.
Buckle in lads.

Our football is better with Richy in the team, we have a threat.
But our midfield and defence are a big worry still.

Only Digne should be guaranteed his place for me.

This.
It's like stepping back to last season, the same formation with almost the same team so it's not very surprising when we get the same sort of results.

On the plus side all of the new recruits who have played so far look to be a vast improvement on the bunch of spineless mercs we saw last season. Once all of the new players are fit and playing we should see a vast improvement. We really missed Richarlison today and we should be looking for another quality forward for January.
