im probably over forgiving of the manager, but i honestly think that for almost all the dreadful passes they made there was either another decent option or they picked the right pass and fluffed it. I'd prefer to think it was a mix of a few rusty players coming in, not getting momentum at the start and then not coping with the crap atmosphere and pressure piling on after every error.

i dont think not being sure of tactics would make you regularly pass 5 yards to the opposition when two of your team mates are free to receive the ball.

i think if you put hoolahan in their on our side tonight we would have looked a lot smoother. couldve been a decent squad option for us over the last couple of seasons when we have missed any kind of playmaker
For me, you've hit the nail right on the head - if we just stopped giving the ball away so easily, we'd be ace.

Everything else isn't too shabby with Robles in goal.

Even though i fell asleep in the extra-time because of how boring the game was, i'm not going to criticize our perfomance, 8 changes from the last game were always going to give us a disjointed team, especially with players like Gibson and Osman playing, who i even forget when they were on the pitch last time for our first team.

We're through, let's celebrate and hope for more upsets today, we're in the quarters already ffs! This does not happen every year.

Oh, and i would like to see a midfield partnership of Gibson and Barry against S'land, i'm tired of McCarthy stinking the place out all season.

Just back from the game. That was a poor showing. We had to rely on Barkley and Deulefeu to liven things up. Osman, despite the goal, was nowhere near fit enough, mirallas was poor and lacked effort. Gibson was the only player passing the ball forwards.

Good penalties, but I didn't leave Goodison feeling like we deserved it, a Norwich victory wouldn't have been an unfair result.

Sums it up for me bud.

I was yawning away the first half. Still, we got through

On reflection, the object in a cup game is to stay in the cup and we did that. So that is success.
Howard wasn't in goal and the world didn't end, maybe he could go in goal again? There is a novel idea.
Gibson played forward passes. Again the world didn't end, maybe we could play some more forward passes.
Players who haven't played in a long time got a game against a Premier League side.
All pluses.
On the negative side, we were dire.

But Sunday is another day, let us see if we have learnt anything from last night.

McCarthy really put in a performance in the second half - looked a lot better when Barks came on and he could concentrate on being the defensive midfielder.

Gibson and Barry doesn't work. There's absolutely no pace between the two and we would get run rings around in midfield, even by Sunderland. M'Vila is actually proving himself as a decent player.

Here's what I took from last night :

Lack of movement coupled with a " flat " possession based team formation is easy to play against.

John Stones is starting to believe the hype. I'm not having a go at him, but not even Beckenbauer would have attempted to dribble the ball out of the six yard box as he did in the first half.

Every time the ball is crossed into our box it's like an unexploded bomb has been lobbed in.

Virtually every corner we allowed Norwich to play a short corner yet we were happy to allow this, despite the incredible pressure the resulting ball put us under ( Joel was screaming at Stones to sort this out )

Osman is finished at this level.

Joel has clearly got more confidence in goal at the moment than Howard. We'd have lost that last night with Howard in goal.

Barkleys poor decision making and giving the ball away is what's going to stop him from becoming a truly great player.

Funes Mori looks like he is going to be very good defender. He had a very good game last night and hopefully will prove to be the long term replacement for Jags.

More than anything we need a creative midfielder.

I know we won in the end, but that was a second string Norwich team that made us look like the away team for long periods.

Stones has been really poor since he came back and is starting to ball watch and not be aware of the opposition players. Either something is not quite right with him or he is believing all the hype.

Barkley's decision making will improve with game time.

But the lack of movement is my main concern at the moment and it means our players having to do 'too much with the ball'. Which results in passes going to the opposition or long senseless balls.

....it was lacklustre but the main positive is that we're through. Home draw against anybody please (but Sheffield Wednesday would be fine if it can be arranged).

And also we got the three results we would have wanted in the other ties ;)

Bit of luck with the balls tonight and this is proper on.

Last eight so every game will be tough whoever and wherever.

We simply have to be better in every department, quicker, more aggressive and stop playing people out of position.

Gibson - admittedly one of my least favourite players - should never, ever, ever have been asked to play at centre-back, simple not his game and hence massively unfair on him. Quite how the manager came up with that non-nonsensical ploy is beyond me and hopefully has been confined to the rubbish bin as a ridiculous experiment we got away with.

Joel Robles might not be the long-term answer to our goalkeeping needs, but and I really, really mean this... if the manager re-instates Tim Howard on Sunday, he wants his head feeling. Robles, despite a few rocky moments first half, did okay and made two or three impressive saves to keep us in it last night - his confidence does not need destroying by going straight back to bench.

I'm not the one so frustrated with the tedium of my life that I have to come on here to vent my spline at a bunch of players who are in no danger of answering you back as some great act of catharsis. You're exactly the sort of embarrassing Mr Angry that goes to games just to hurl abuse for 90 mins while your kid sits quietly next to you, just wanting the ground to open up.
Away my spineless jellyfish friend, away and get angry in silence about all the other things in your life that you have no control over, create a ball from your fears, climb inside it and let it devour you.
I really hope you have no pets, I would fear for them.
Your a disgrace i bet you don't even support everton.
You were slagging joel off during the penalty shootout and thats unforgivable.
You are someone who is very brave behind a keyboard and a wimp in real life.
You are the coward hiding behind your keyboard acting brave.
