That's a good point. If your midfield protects the defense better by keeping the ball better, you don't need to score those ten extra goals because you let less in.

We wouldn't have to rely on Cahill being a match winner if our system wasn't always set up to benefit him and we play a more creative player in his position who benefits our stikers and other mids therefor making them match winners. More than just one though.

Didn't we do that when he was injured? Players can raise their game to cover for him, but they can't be relied on to do it with the consistency that Cahill has shown. I don't understand why we'd want to handicap ourselves by leaving him out altogether, rather than adapting the system.
