Another interesting thing about this game was how we set up 4-3-3 in the 2nd, I could get used to that a bit more.

We play our game at a relatively slow, measured pace anyway, but when there's no adrenaline in the players' veins it becomes snail-paced, lacking energy, thought and direction. Today was such a game. Very poor.

One thing Martinez has got to find a way round is the opposition pressing our back line. Whenever our keeper was in possession, whether in play or looking to play out a goal kick, Porto put a man on at least 3, and sometimes all, of our back line. That back line remained very close to the edge of our box in these instances so we just never got the ball through the back line and into our middle men, never mind our attackers. Strikes me that if teams are going to do this to us then we're going to have to push the back line further up the park now and again when looking to receive the ball from the keeper. How you do that and still retain possession I'm not sure.........over to you Bobby.

Good post mate. Very true the dilemma you pose. That same issue calls for hoof ball.

There will be a way round it. I'm not the man to think of it, but I expect Martinez to see it, and it will be interesting.

Is it just player confidence on the ball to not be afraid? Or do 1 or 2 midfielders drop even deeper to make things move on, then have the energy to join the attack when in play?

Good tactical debate, but it IS possible, whether it be quality or team ethic.

Terrible game today, proper dull.
Besic looked impressive, hopefully he keeps that up into the new season, would be good to see him get a full game against Celta or Paderborn.
Joel is awful and I'd be happy to never see him in an Everton shirt again. I really think hes gonna cost us in one of the cups next season if he gets played

The best way to beat this trap is for the keeper to clip the ball out to the wingers or straight to midfield bypassing the front press which is relatively risk free. Germany are good at this with Neur who plays like an extra defender.

Yeah, unfortunately Howard can't guarantee which side of the field he's going to hit with a kick let alone pick someone out. Also very slow to come off line so doesn't do the sweeper job that modern goalies like Lloris and Neur do either. Good shot stopper thought.

were look so far away from being ready. only 2 weeks from start of season and we look pretty dire , i know theres players to come back but we look terrible at the moment

Don't worry la, we've still got Mirallas, Coleman, Lukaku to come back in, plus have everybody at full fitness.

I think we'll hit the ground running. I have utter faith in Martinez.
