I remember being really gutted about Dean Saunders.
I was only 9 or so at the time. Apparently Howard Kendall met him at a service station, and gave him a piece of folded up paper, looking all smug, and said "this is what we can offer you, son".

Saunders opened it and laughed. It was less than he was on at Derby!

Seem to remember Moyes making several attempts to sign Alan Smith (ex-Leeds/Man Utd) during his time.
Not sure how close we came but I always thought he was going to end up with us and he never did.
Probably for the best...
