Everton Summer transfers 2021

You can say that about the other positions that are a bigger priority - RB, CM, Wide player.

1 genuine quality midfielder improves us more than a CB that we have adequate cover for IMO

Agree that RB, CM and winger is where either I) our first team is weakest; or II) the squad is at its thinnest, and thus should be prioritised.

However I disagree that, for instance, a new CM steps us up a level as much as a CB does, but that is just my view on football tactics as a whole. Good CB alongside Godfrey allows us to play higher up the pitch and gets our quality players on the ball more often. A new CM no doubt will improve the team and the players around him, but without a new CB we will still need to sit back and play counter attacking football, so limits how we set up as a whole.

Not one player in our squad would be a starter in an ideal world, we could theoretically improve in every single position. I don't think anybody thinks our centre halves are the best around, but unless we have an enormous amount of money to spend this summer I can't see us prioritising a centre half when there are other positions we barely have functional options in.

Agree RB, CM and winger are the priority areas for me.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that not one player on our squad would be a starter in an ideal world? I mean, unless you're playing fifa and want a front three of Messi Ronaldo and Haaland, but let's be real.

In an ideal world we are playing Champions League football, or football of that quality. Who can stay:
DCL
Richy
Jameth
Doucs
Allan
Digne
Godfrey
Pickford

All good enough IMHO (I will get slated for Picko shout).

Need another CM and a RB to start. Winger to correct the squad gulf in that area (we have next to nothing beneath the starters).

We have plenty of CBs, but I don't see anyone other than Godders as good enough to start in a champs league game tomorrow really. Replace one of Mina or Keane with a good starter and I think we have everything in that position with enough competition and quality off the bench. I'd sell Keano and keep Mina.

Well yeah, that's exactly what i'm talking about. That's why I said 'ideal world' rather than 'world where things are slightly different but not that much'. The point was that we could theoretically improve on every single player we have, but realistically we're not going to.

Jury still out on Godfrey for me as a centre back to be first choice. But you'd have to see what Holgate/Godfrey with Mina or Keane would do in terms of pushing us further up the pitch.

I think the idea of having 2 pacy (if Kouilbally were to come) centre backs doesn't generally mean playing a high line would push us forward effectively, as we're lacking ball carriers and pace in midfield and attack.

A solid defence is generally built in partnerships and consistency. Keane and Mina play consistently and work well. Holgate and Mina did the same last season. We've generally not had a balanced or consistent defence all season. The times we have is when we've had 4 CB on the pitch which itself means you play a certain way.

To all the glass half full fans. Who wet their knickers every summer over FFP. And we’ve got no money, covid, big losses, we can’t sell the deadwood

UEFA FFP has nothing to do with Everton unless we get into Europe.

The Premier League have their own FFP model which, as it stands, hasn't changed.

FFP is just one small factor, relatively speaking. Even under the old UEFA model, it'd be likely if we broke it and were in Europe (like Wolves) we'd get a small smack on the wrist - like Wolves' squad was reduced from 25 to 21 for European competition.

The main issue is just running a club sustainably and sensibly. And that's not by spunking another £100m. We might do that in total, if we bring in £40-50m by selling Kean and Iwobi and Bernard, Tosun etc, and free up all those wages too, plus the likes of Walcott and Bolasie on top.

That's totally realistic and doable. But that's my entire point. We aren't going to be spending £100m and bringing in two players with that.

Very true. I actually think we currently have players who are good enough on the ball to keep it in a more compressed space and who would prefer to be playing in the opposition's half than our own, so I think we'd play to our qualities in that respect.

That being said, one of our biggest issues (another one? -ed.) is that we lack players who can defend from the front, which you definitely need if you are to play further up the pitch. Gomes, DCL and Jameth are all pretty woeful off the ball, I would say, and on the few times we have played a higher game this year teams have been able to play through us with too much ease. Doesn't matter how good you are at the back, if you have runners in front and behind then you will be exposed unless you sit back on the edge of your own box...

All linked together isn't it! Me personally I would prioritise, as I say, RB, CM and a winger, and add a CB to the picture next year.

That being said one has to react to the market and if a quality CB becomes available then I wouldn't turn my nose up at it, that's for sure.

That's how I see it.

But what Carlo wants he should get. And if that feller on talksport says he's gonna get backed....can only mean good things

More on Koulibaly €50mil mentioned...

For me he is too old we have young and upcoming CB's .

Honestly think only digne and James are good enough. Maybe richarlison.

The rest would not have us competing in the champions League. We would be getting humiliated and dumped out in the group stages every year. There would be no point.
