He wouldn’t have been free and I bet from the Chairman’s point of view, a much bigger risk.

He has invested huge sums and is about to fund a half a billion pound stadium.

Giving the job to a largely untried rookie at a time when the club is under intense pressure from PL financial rules was never going to happen.

We have to reduce the playing staff and balance the books. We can’t afford transfer fees, let alone paying manager compensation.

Unfortunately that’s the legacy of our profligate transfers.

Benitez had far more experience than Potter and didn’t require compensation payments. The club were always going to pick someone who was out of contract. It was obvious from the first minute.

All speculation again on your part. Beneitez is a universally polarising appointment. If he doesnt have a good season, particularly the first 5 games, it'll be an albatross around Moshiri's neck.

We'll only know for sure end of the transfer window really. There's an argument to be made we've brought in Townsend/Gray/Begovic to keep the powder dry for a 'big 'un', but who knows.
If we spent that on a big signing we would still need to buy a right back another striker and possibly a centre back so spending nearly £100 million would probably mean selling richarlison and then try and replace him

Last season, our away form was outstanding and our home form let us down so that, at the death we missed top 6/top 4 by a small margin, even given the fact that overall our squad was "lacking".
So, whoever the manager was to be, in this coming season, he only needs to replicate our away form and improve our home form for us to be challenging, once more at the top end of the table, as opposed to the middle of the table.

The question surely is, can Benitez get those sort of consitent performances out of this squad , with the few additions we have already added?

Time will tell and speculation, at this stage, is pointless.
No one in world football would be able to replicate that away record. It was a total fluke aided by the lack of fans. We were lucky in a fair few of those games too

Another waste of money - Here We Go!

Genuine he is a decent player but their are many tricky wingers out their, our scouting is pathetic to be honest

If we're being screwed for buying players by FFP then that's a disaster. We probably won't shift anyone else before the deadline (without harming the squad) and we can't buy anyone decent to replace the dross in the squad.

This is the outcome of several years of mismanagement under Moshiri

Fabrizio Romano has just said we’ve made a bid of 18m plus add ons for Harry Winks on his podcast.
I don’t believe that’s true for one second. Sources at the club have publicly said that we want a right back and a right sided winger. We don’t need a midfielder like Winks. If we can’t afford to spend on Dumfries until we sell, there’s no way we bid for Winks.
