I get this but in this scenario what would be your proposed way forward?

Frank settles on 433 and 523 as his preferred formations (e.g wide players needed in both)

El Ghazi returns to Villa, Richarlison gets his move. Townsend doesn’t look like being ready until Christmas because of his cruciate.

Iwobi is first choice in the attacking midfield role in 433, or the RWB role in 523.

After player sales, we spend the majority of our transfer budget on a first choice centre back, first choice defensive midfielder, and a central striker as replacement for Richarlison.

That leaves Gordon and Gray as our only wingers in the squad. Dobbin is promoted to cover one flank.

What do you do for the other? Do you hope we don’t get injuries. Do we move Iwobi out wide? Do we promote another youth winger who might not be ready? Play someone out of position?

I know this is a hypothetical scenario but it’s easily one that could unfold this summer.

I agree with your principle, we don’t want to hoarde average players but equally we’re a million miles off having two quality players for each position and we’re already maxing out using the academy (Gordon Branthwaite Simms Dobbin) just to make the squad up.

Clearly if we sold Richarlison and signed CB, DM, CF then we'd also be selling other players to generate the addition of a wide player and another CM.

Brilliant. I can't wait for us to sign another random young goalkeeper this transfer window.
Don't think we will this time
Already have Crellin, Tyrer and Leban.

Lonergan will leave so we may sign another 'experienced' keeper as third choice.

The worry with the Almiron link, if you were jittery is that we may applied our budget to the tangible availability and thats the best we came up with. But silly season stuff really.

May as well just go for someone with the potential for a massive upside like Scotty Twine if the above were true.

Id be the first into the trenches to go against the group think on here, but even id find it hard to find the upside of Almiron.
Would love a little Twine. No idea if he's ready to take that big a step but definitely worth a look.

He's definitely the profile of player our scouts should be identifying anyway, i sometimes think PL clubs say to themselves - lets wait and see how he does at a Championship club first and take a conservative risk adverse approach, but sometimes necessity (funds) is the mother of creativity ...its worth a 4 -5 mill investment and an area of the pitch we need creativity.

I sometimes admire Moyes backing his judgement on lower league players for all the conservative talk, he's prepared to take the risk on, , Dawson( though hadPL experience) and particularly big money on Bowen and Benrahma - we know what he did here.

It's hard to give an in depth analytical answer to be honest, it's just as simple as 'don't sign someone like Almiron'. Try to make the budget stretch further so that another winger (which is necessary in the scenario you're talking about, not just an optional extra) is affordable, scout outside the obvious places to find an affordable alternative, just don't saddle yourself with another player who is earning £60k+ a week for contributing nothing and who becomes a millstone round your neck for the 4/5 years that they want a contract for.

Please say this isn’t so ?

Every single time I see his face I think of this:
