Totally. It’s not like they were perfect players, obvious flaws. Lack of pace for one and made worse by a slow immobile midfield. What they did have though, is quality in the final third, good delivery.

People celebrated getting rid of them at the time and tried to rationalise replacing them with Gray and Townsend. Same has happened with Richie, Digne etc. We’ve systematically stripped quality in the final third out of the team. Instead of replacing them with similar quality but without the flaws, like lack of pace, we’ve massively downgraded on quality.

We now don’t have any reliable match winners, difference makers. It’s been happening right under our noses last few years and if you called it out you’re a bed wetter. This has been the clear trajectory but some refuse(d) to see it. Reap what we’ve sown.
I wish I could give that more than a like mate. 100% agree.

We missed the creativity and goals from both. I know James was injured a lot but when he was GS stepped in. In the 4 seasons he played for us he scored 29 goals and had 27 assists. If Walcott converted even half of the one on ones he set up he would have had 10 more assists. We didn't have a player like that in the squad last season and we would not have been in trouble if we had. Not saying we would have been competing for Europe or anything but we wouldn't have been in a relegation fight. Most people on here can't see past their hate for both players, one because of his injuries and perceived lack of effort, and the other because it's fashionable to hate certain players. Osman was the same. Another player who's goal and assist contribution was undervalued by most on here.

We need a striker desperately to cover for and also to play alongside Dom. But we also need more creativity in the team.
Iceland scored 29 in 4 seasons? Blimey, thought it was about half that.

Get Joao Pedro and Ben Diaz in. Diaz is more of a competition for DCL, Pedro is more of a replacement for Richarlison. He could compete for the place in squad with Gray and we could actually start playing 3-5-2.

Move McNeil to midfield and get in Gana and Garner. Get Gomes, Allan, Gbamin, Rondon out. Then we have this depth:

Gana/Garner - Onana/Doucouré, Iwobi/McNeil + Davies

Pedro/Gray, DCL/Diaz + Townsend (injured)

Won't bee too pretty football but the team should run and be solid.

Brilliant post.

Get Joao Pedro and Ben Diaz in. Diaz is more of a competition for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Pedro is more of a replacement for Richarlison. He could compete for the place in squad with Gray and we could actually start playing 3-5-2.

No. Watford want £30m no thanks.

Don't want to let them off the hook - but perhaps it is waiting on the right players to be available at the selling club, with replacements in place.

E.g. like a housing chain - it all has to be lined up.
How many points should we sacrifice while they wait and see? I think we have no dough, it is the conclusion with the least number of assumptions.

Sell Richy to pay off the P&S problem - for 60m reinvest 17 on McNeil and 30 on Onana

Sell Gordon for 60m reinvest 25 on Adams and 15 in Diaz.

15m gone from the first, 20m gone from the second never to be seen off again.

Richy & Gordon sold.
McNeil, Adams, Diaz and Onana bought.

One very good but also raw young prospect signed.
An utterly Pembridge/Gemmel level McNeil.
A possible Brett Angell and a likely mike Newell level signing.

People still happy to sell Gordon if that's how we are gonna spend it? Or another way if we had 50m would you all be screaming Adams and Diaz are too good deals to turn down for 40m of it, as that's effectively whst turning down the Gordon bids will see us in reality lose, a cf saints replaced with a 19yo who'd never played foe Chelsea and a lad who for 3 years was hated by Blackburn fans fir being awful (until his weird fairytale stuff with Chile)
