Everton v Chelsea via GrandOldTeam

Saturday afternoon will mark the third clash this campaign between Everton and Chelsea, with the Londoners downing the Toffees in the two previous meetings.

But this is a completely different Everton side to the lacklustre Ronald Koeman outfit that went down 2-0 without a fight in August and the side that unluckily, to say the least, exited the Carabao Cup with David Unsworth at the helm.

But now six games into the reign of Sam Allardyce the mood around the camp is a world apart from what it was.

But the 12:30 kick-off will prove a real test for Allardyce’s unbeaten start to life at Everton.

The reigning champions are currently sitting third in the division, a monumental 14 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City.

It will be a massive disappointment for Antonio Conte that his team haven’t put up more of a challenge this time around.

The southern Blues have already suffered four defeats in the league this season, just one fewer than in the whole of last term.

One to watch –

Eden Hazard. Need I say more?

The electrifying Belgian will send shivers down any defender’s spine, contributing to a goal every other game so far this season – and the attacker hasn’t hit top form yet, it is a massive worry for the Blues that Saturday is the day he could turn it on and run the Everton backline ragged.

Whether he is deployed as a centre forward or as usual in a left wing position, one thing is clear, Hazard needs special attention.

Team news –

Leighton Baines is still absent for the hosts, Ross Barkley has been spotted in first team training but this one will come too soon for the England international. Yannick Bolaise has a good chance of featuring for Everton for the first time in over a year.

The visitors will be without top scorer Alvaro Morata after he picked up his fifth booking of the season against Bournemouth in midweek, the Spaniard has 11 goals in all competitions. David Luiz and Charly Musonda are unavailable through injury.
Man in the middle –

Bobby Madley will take charge of the game, he is no stranger to cards, having dished out five reds and 57 yellows this season, two of those reds came in Everton’s 1-1 draw at the Etihad in August, giving Kyle Walker and Morgan Schneiderlin their marching orders.

An away win won’t see Chelsea move in the table, even if Manchester United are defeated, the Red Devils’ superior goal difference will leave Conte’s side as high as third, but a home win could see Everton go above Leicester (providing United do the job over them) into 8th.

Up the Toffees.

Sam Allardyce has confirmed that Wayne Rooney is out due to illness, specifically a head cold bad enough to render him unfit to play. Tom Davies comes in for him. Meanwhile in the Chelsea ranks, Gary Cahill sits this one out on the bench, with Andreas Christiansen and Antonio Rudiger filling the centre-back berths. Despite the absence of Alvaro Morata, Michy Batshuayi still can’t get in the Chelsea side, a state of affairs that suggests the Stamford Bridge jig is up for him.

11.35am GMT

Everton: Pickford, Kenny, Jagielka, Keane, Martina, Schneiderlin, Gueye, Davies, Lennon, Calvert-Lewin, Sigurdsson.

Subs: Williams, Bolasie, Sandro, Niasse, Holgate, Robles, Baningime.

11.33am GMT

Wayne Rooney is not in Everton’s matchday squad, for reasons that remain unclear. Yannick Bolasie is in line for a recall to the bench, more than a year after rupturing knee ligaments against Manchester United last December. Leighton Baines, Maarten Stekelenburg and Ross Barkley remain injured, while Seamus Coleman and Ramiro Funes Mori are long term absentees.

Chelsea will line out todfaqy without Alvaro Morata, who sits this one out on the Naughty Step after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season against Bournemouth on Wednesday. Gary Cahill has been dropped to the bench, while David Luiz is also out and remains linked with a January exit from Stamford Bridge.

Barry will be here shortly.

Everton frustrate Chelsea after Ashley Williams enjoys lucky escape via The Guardian

Another step forward for Everton under Sam Allardyce, another afternoon of torment for Chelsea and Antonio Conte. Head bowed, hands deep in pockets, the Italian was a picture of frustration after watching his team dominate at Goodison Park but fail to find a way past a supremely well-drilled home defence.

Everton’s unbeaten run under their new manager remains intact thanks to excellent displays from their expensive summer recruits, Jordan Pickford and Michael Keane, plus Chelsea’s over-reliance on Eden Hazard. The playmaker was once again mesmerising in a dominant visiting display but was left to do too much on his own.

Everton 0-0 Chelsea via GrandOldTeam

The art of solid, stout and resolute defending was plain to see as the pragmatism of Sam Allardyce took centre stage. He probably figured that despite the upturn in Everton’s fortunes, to go toe-to-toe with Chelsea would probably be a mistake.

Everton went out with a point and came in with a point and whilst it wasn’t great Christmas entertainment, it sees the Blues remain unbeaten and defensive confidence continues to grow.

The last game before Christmas and a huge test for the resurgent Blues under Sam Allardyce, a visit of the reigning champions Chelsea. With four wins a draw under his belt, Big Sam was looking for his third successive victory over Chelsea and in aiming to achieve this, he selected a starting line-up with four changes: Pickford, Martina, Keane, Jagielka (c), Kenny, Gueye, Schneiderlin, Davies, Lennon, Sigurdsson and Calvert-Lewin.

Without the services of the suspended Morata and themselves on a good run of form with just ones loss in their last ten games, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was still able to field a strong eleven of: Courtois, Azpilicueta (c), Christensen, Rudiger, Moses, Kante, Bakayoko, Alonso, Willian, Hazard and Pedro.

For this Christmas cracker, Bobby Madley was awarded the refereeing responsibility.

The first half was anything but a Christmas cracker as Chelsea dominated the possession with Everton defending stoutly and relying on rare breaks and long balls to try and gain an advantage.

A Keane header found Lennon wide right and his quick cross found Sigurdsson but his shot was blocked.

Everton survived a tenth minute hiatus when a cross from Hazard saw two attempts with Phil Jagielka clearing twice, the second off the kind from Pedro.

Chelsea were dominating the play and DCL was looking somewhat isolated up front, but working hard as ever. Martina was harshly booked for his first tackle on Moses, Willian putting the free kick well over the bar.

Yannick Bolasie came out to warm up on 30 minutes, raising arguable the loudest cheer of the game so far.

A good ball from Schneiderlin set Davies free through the middle but he snatched at his shot and pulled it wide of the target.

A pass from Keane was picked off by Bakayoko to release Pedro down the left channel, but Pickford narrowed the angle and turned the powerful shot over for a corner.

Gana Gueye won a strong tackle in midfield to set DCL away on the right wing against Christensen with the forward bullying the defender into a mistake. DCL worked his way into the box to see a shot blocked with Sigurdsson on the left screaming for the pass.

Half Time: 0-0

Sam Allardyce made two changes for the second half with Ashley Williams replacing Tom Davies and switching to a back three, and Sandro Ramirez replacing Aaron Lennon.

Pickford was early into action with a save from Pedro as he picked up a Williams block on Alonso.

With just four minutes of the half played, Everton had to use their third substitute as Gana Gueye went down, Beni Baningime his replacement.

Michael Keane was booked for a foul on Hazard on 56 minutes but shortly after the England man made a superb tackle on the Belgian as he tried to get free on the right flank.

Fabregas replaced Pedro on 62 minutes and Pickford had to be alert to foil Hazard as the visitors looked to turn the screw. Batshuayi replaced Willian with twenty minutes to play.

Everton survived a scare as a cross from Moses saw the header from Williams hit the post.

A Fabregas corner found Hazard who found Rudiger in the box, but Pickford was again in the right place.

Zapacosta replaced Moses in Conte’s final throw of the dice, but Everton were in no mood to give anything away and the terrific defensive display with Jagielka outstanding saw the Blues home.

And they could have snatched it when a Sigurdsson corner found Keane only for his header to clear the bar.

Full Time: 0-0
