Everton’s Ronald Koeman says Roberto Martínez is ‘a really good talker’ via The Guardian

• Martínez highlighted defensive frailties during a TV appearance
• Koeman also defends Ross Barkley’s ‘funny’ goal celebration
Ronald Koeman has described Roberto Martínez as “a really good talker” who left him several problems to address at Everton this season.

Martínez was a guest of Sky’s Goals on Sunday programme last weekend when he claimed to have witnessed the same defensive frailties in Everton’s 6-3 defeat of Bournemouth that blighted his reign at Goodison Park. Koeman said he would reserve judgment until the end of the season on what Martínez left him but is bemused by the Belgium manager’s negative comments about an aspect of Everton’s game that has undeniably improved.

Boro 0-0 Everton via GrandOldTeam

koeman-150x150.jpg

Everton extended their unbeaten Premier League run to eight games but will be disappointed to leave the Riverside without three points against a resolute Middlesbrough.

Romelu Lukaku went closest for Everton in the first half but Victor Valdes rolled back the years and saved superbly.

After the interval, Boro captain Ben Gibson saw his header cleared off the line by Leighton Baines, before Valdes made another excellent stop to deny Ademola Lookman.

Joel Robles produced a stunning save to deny Rudy Gestede late on as the game fizzled out to a 0-0.

Report by Groucho;

Everton started well. As the snow and rain and sleet fell, both came back into it a bit. Robles made some good saves and Lukaku nearly scored but for a good stop by Valdes.

Lookman looked lively too. 0-0 at the break.

Half time, and we can cut to an exclusive video of Ronald and Erwin’s team talk;

Look closely and you can see Duncan Ferguson doing the balloon dance in the background. Blizzard conditions for the second half.

First substitution was Enner Valencia on for Gana. Shortly after Boro have an effort headed off the line.

Lennon and Barry came on but still we could not find the net. Clean sheet though.

That Boro fan with the drum too

Victor Valdés proves Middlesbrough’s best performer in Everton draw via The Guardian

This was another game in which Middlesbrough equipped themselves relatively well but could not find the telling breakthrough. Aitor Karanka can take some satisfaction at his side matching in-form Everton but, ultimately, their winless run continues on an afternoon when they could have snatched a crucial victory.

Everton were not really at the races and both Romelu Lukaku and Ademola Lookman squandered scoring opportunities, but Karanka needed a win more than Ronald Koeman. Víctor Valdés was arguably Boro’s best performer and Adama Traoré was their only real creative outlet.
