West Ham in advanced talks to sign Southampton captain José Fonte via The Guardian

• Bilic may have to beat off competition from Everton to land defender
• Player’s last appearance for his club came in a defeat at Goodison Park
West Ham are in advanced talks to sign the Southampton captain, José Fonte, although Slaven Bilic may have to beat off competition from Everton to land the Portuguese defender this month.

West Ham have began negotiations with Southampton, although it is understood the player is yet to formally discuss a move to the London Stadium.

West Ham United are in advanced talks to sign Southampton’s José Fonte, although Slaven Bilic may have to beat off competition from Everton, as well as West Bromwich Albion, to land the 33-year-old defender. There has been contact between West Ham and Southampton, although it is understood Fonte himself is yet to formally discuss a move to the London Stadium.

Ronald Koeman, who coached Fonte at Southampton, is also an admirer of the player. Fonte, who could command as much as £12m, has 18 months left on his contract. He was again left out of Southampton’s squad for the 1-0 FA Cup replay win against Norwich City on Wednesday. Claude Puel admitted the Portugal international was weighing up “opportunities” to leave the club he joined in 2010 from Crystal Palace.
