Everton v Liverpool: match preview via The Guardian

The rivals approach the 227th Merseyside derby with morale lifted by important victories in midweek while also anxious to avoid a defeat that would ruin Christmas for one half of the city. Everton, who will be without the suspended captain, Phil Jagielka, are unbeaten at home in the Premier League this season but have not won any of the last 12 derbies. For all the scrutiny on their defence, Liverpool have kept four clean sheets in their last six matches and Jürgen Klopp will hope Joël Matip recovers from an ankle injury for their first experience of Goodison Park. Everton to start contract talks with Ross Barkley in new year via The Guardian

• England international under contract with boyhood club until 2018
• Midfielder has endured difficult season under Ronald Koeman
Ronald Koeman said Everton will open talks over a new contract for Ross Barkley in the new year and insisted no club is “knocking on the door” for his players.

Everton secured new deals on Friday for the veteran midfielder Gareth Barry, defender Leighton Baines and promising youngster Mason Holgate. Barry and Baines would have been out of contract at the end of this season – the reported four-year deal Baines signed in 2014 included a conditional final 12 months – while Barkley is under contract until 2018.
