I don’t hate Ramsey as a player but he’s hugely symbolic of our “scouting” in recent years. Basically we seem to like to assume that if they were good once in their careers, or played for a good team they’re worth a punt irrespective of injuries, poor recent form, etc.

Huge swerve, for me.
I’d say the opposite, we’ve punted on unknowns, players from foreign leagues and less actual proven PL players.

as ive said in previous posts... go to south america/africa. get the scouts pick promising players for pennies and develop them /sell for big money. IE: luis diaz played for junior 2 seasons previous to his landing on porto , the same porto who put their eyes on a young Falcao (River) , young james (Banfield) just to name 2.

uruguay often sell cheap on great players, as argentina and brazil for players NOT in the top teams .

players from those countries would be at 5m MAX yet they would offer the same as EPL overpriced journeymen and be actually profitable if at least 1 develops into a nice player (25m+). if you still want em to be european players, then get to netherlands/belgium, but they will be more xpensive.

Did you forget about work permits.

In the Premier League, the number of overseas U21 players a club can sign will be limited to three in the January transfer window and six per season moving forwards. This enables the recruitment of the best players from around the world to train and play together with homegrown talent. Under FIFA’s rules, the UK’s exit from the EU will also mean that clubs will not be able to sign players from overseas until they are 18.

We went to the Barcelona well a few times with varying degrees of success, bought Walcott, Delph and latterly Townsend and Rondon in the hopes they’d stumble upon whatever former glories they once had.

If we go further back we also had the ongoing debacle of signing every Man Utd castoff because they must be good if they’re signing from United, right? Rooney = Winning mentality, etc.

It’s just all felt a bit lazy for one reason or another.

Work permits is the issue here

We could find lots of Gems but if we can’t get work permits for them just think of Henry Onyekuru.

Never played a game for us cause he could get a work permit
