Everton first team players who we never should have sold or got rid of?

Had a bad night's sleep, but since the Ross Barkley thread on whether opinions are should we do our best to keep him or maybe he will go divided I thought back in history of first team players or the old reserve team players - {not the youth players} who we let go in history who we let go, and paid a price!
Off the top of my head {please add or debate on what you think}
I came up with this list it's off the top of my head just instict-

TG Jones - froze out out of both teams, by coach Cliff Britton the first and the reserve for feigning injury undeservedly, almost sold to AS Roma but for a hiccup over currency mix up on value - returned after the dispute to play as he was a brilliant ball playing centre half { my late father told me}

Dave Hickson -The Cannon Ball Kid - sold to soon with a massive campaign not to sell him to Huddersfield town ended up over the park where so many blues fans adorned him that night Anfield gates were boosted { my late Father was one blue of thousands in that crowd he scored two on his debut for the other lot!
he returned never the same impact as first time around ended up at Tranmere Rovers played for all three merseyside clubs.

Bobby Collins - The pocket Dynamo - On our 2nd attempt we signed this stocky goal scoring midfielder scottish international { who I just missed watching live} My late father and my older brothers hero as he came to a poor blues side, and transformed them with his size 4 boots, and his crunching tackles , and goal scoring tally - He pushed the blues to a respectful league placing then asked for a pay rise as captain manager the Catt asked new Chairman John Moores - NO way - collins had a smallholding in Ormskirk , and reared pigs as a hobby and to boost income allegedly asked the just for a sow pig - still NO was the answer- he moved to 2nd Division Leeds then in Division 2 sold cheap considered to be too old - what a clanger Collins under Revie gained instant promotion in his first season in the old Division one was the PFA player of the year - no doubt helped the successful dynasty of the LEEDS era to come even ended up as a coach there!

Alan Ball - Ball of Fire - Probably the best box to box midfielder free scoring midfielder ever to grace the Goodison turf - I have never seen anything like him since - He had everything bought for 110,000 from Blackpool -England international idolised by everyone - world class - the mysteriously sold for £220 ,000 to Arsenal in a cloud of mystery as he wanted to stay - rumours were rife blues fans cried - he went on to Arsenal/ Southampton to win honours - while the blues fell away!
The great side fell away!

Steve Mcmahon -
I seen this lad playing in his youth in the first team, you could tell he was special as an attacking midfielder - sold very early in his career for big money to Vila diverting his way over the park to rub our noses in it in a successful Liverpool team.

David Johnson - Another young player came in as a lightning fast centre forward, looked a great no 9 but he was a bit unlucky as he hit the woodwork a lot so his goal tally was not as high as it should have been for us - sold to Ipswich with I think the pathetic no 9 Rod Belfitt coming the other way - johnson was soon snapped up by our rivals over the park where he blossomed scoring for fun - returning to us less than half the player he was for them!

Martin Keown - A bargain from Villa £1 million - a strong centre half gaining international status with us sold a few years later to Arsenal for the very same price no profit at all - where he won trophies with them became a top centre half for them and England!

Eric Dier - -considered by Manager David Moyes not that good did we have him on trial ?? now an England international and a very good Spurs side as defensive midfielder let go off our books for nothing!

Shkodran Mustafi - another trialist centre half who became an international on trial with David Moyes deemed to be not up to it - now Arsenal paid big money for him!

Please add more or debate please bear in mind the players had to make the old reserves team or as a mature player - no youth players unless the made it either in the old reserves or first team please, as many teams have let youth players go too early - us Baines Jags etc Man U Johnny Giles etc ;)

I just missed seeing T.G. so no comment.

Collins; deffo. He only stopped playing at the top level in 1967 when he was 'targeted' Vs Juventus, resulting in a double thigh fracture.

Ball; say no more

Johnson - Am I the only one who remembers that He, along with Whittle and another Fullback, who may have been Peter Scott, but don't quote me on that. Were quickly moved on by a prudish Harry Catterick after being involved in some - for now a days - mildish shenanigins with some Holly Lodge School girls. (all Over 16 btw)

Keown; wasn't he under some sort of temp 'loan' arrangement?

My own candidate is Jimmy Gabriel - sold off by Harry aged 27-28 for wanting to play a more varied type football...if it was on. Not just - Plan A, no plan B, get it and give it to the winger.
Played on for years, later in the back 4...It might have all been different if He replaced Labone in that Semi rather than Sandy Brown (top bloke though he was)

I think you mean - Jon O'Kane ?

Think he liked his ale too much

No, definitely O'Connor. It was back in my season ticket days and I was impressed by him. Not the finished article but had a good touch and knew how to play with the ball.

Been watching since the mid 80's and there's not many that fit the criteria to be honest. So starting from memory and hoping the arl grey matter still works -

Gary Lineker - can honestly say that my young chubby cheeks were wet with tears. I had just watched him score for fun, against so called big teams, in important games. Pace to burn and always in the right place. Here was my version of that lots Ian Rush. Could have won the double in his first season, but Lady Luck wasn't kind that year. Watched the World Cup and buzzed every time Lineker cane up with an Everton tag.

Derek Mountfield - great centre half who also knew how to score goals, sometimes important goals. Didn't see eye to eye with Mr Kendall and was eventually shipped out to Villa. Great team at the time but eventually his career declined.

Gary Stevens and Trevor Steven - done the business for us,won trophies, regular England Internationals, performed week in week out. Only sold because English clubs were banned from Europe. Went on to win trophies at Glasgow Rangers.

Don Hutchison - ok he played for the dark side but even so he gave his all for us, especially when we were poor. Captain, scored goals, got stuck in. Was peeved off when we let him go to Sunderland.

Gary Speed - watched this little beaut score against us on the opening day of the season at Goodison, in a championship winning team.....when Nev sat against the post at half time. The little Welsh git was an Evertonian as well....didn't like him for that, but was made up when he turned up at Goodison. Always great for a goal and from midfielders that is a bonus. Gutted to see him leave for the sunny shores of Newcastle. Admit I joined in the chants and not happy over that, but if he wasn't such a good player I wouldn't have been ar$ed. Now upstairs with fellow Everton greats such as Dean, Lawton, Catterick, Lawton and Ball.

Duncan Ferguson - sold behind the managers back by Peter Johnston. Not prolific in front of goal but always got stuck in, injuries, playing for a crap team. Why sell him when he was our inspiration at times? Returned to the beautiful Goodison Park and it was ding ding round two, plus a cheerful song about his pigeons. Go ed Big Dunc, even handed over some meff of a burglar to the Bizzies...what a gent

Matteo Ferrari and Marco Matterrazi - purchased from the Italian leagues and both totally different types of players. Ferrari although slight I thought was a really good player and deserves to be taken on. Money spoke I assume or injuries, eventually released back to Italy

Matterazi - well impressed with his displays, big tall lanky snide of an Italian, but you could tell he had class. Scored a back heel at Goodison, how many cultured centre halves have done that? Then proceeded to get sent off and in typical Mediterranean style passion, decided to sit down near the family enclosure and cry his eyes out. Went on to star for Inter Milan and become a World Cup Winner.
Hutchinson and Speed especially were much better that most of the midfielders we had during that period and I was also peeved when they left. Found it really annoying when Matterazi established himself as an Italian international that he was constantly referred to as having had a poor time at Everton. He got caught out a couple of times and as you say he had a bit of snide in him but it was obvious he was a cut above those around him and I'd have loved to see more.

He was a centre back but played a handful of games at right back if memory serves. I thought he was a good prospect but did he get an injury and never really recover?

Yes gabby sold too early but with Kendall coming and Harvey emerging it was a tough one , but played well for Southampton - Gabby was a great stalwart to our club signed young a dynamic player;)
keown was our player payed a million sold for the same price!
I never seen TG just heard about him just waiting for his book to come- my late father raved about him!

That's the definitive list, close thread ;)
Hey I seldom open threads so hold onlol
great feedback to everyone on the ones I missed - I did not count the European ban as imo it was obvious why they moved on even out manager went- talking of the great HK - fans went mad when he went in that part ex deal to Birmingham for the Latch - he was still playing well for us then!
Saying that he learnt his apprenticeship to end up at Stoke and Blackburn then with us for the glory years - that's fate for you!

I know I'm in a minority on this one, but Sandro Pistone was a lot better than people thought. Highest passing stats in the league in one season, including a lot of sideways passes, mainly because although Kevin Kilbane was a nice guy, he could not get his head round the concept of 'overlapping full backs', and was forever getting in Sandros way. Moysie did of course bring Pistone back after he left ,but he spent the whole season injured. Ah..what might have been....:)
