An Everton youth team has flown out to South Africa to compete in the Future Champions 2013 tournament.
With several youngsters away on international duty, Alan Irvine has taken a team of Under-16s and below to the Under-17s competition in Soweto.
Everton began in Group B with a 1-1 draw against Qatar's AspireAcademy on Monday, with Johannesburg Secondary next up on Tuesday.
With the three-team groups decided, a game against a side from one of the other three mini-leagues follows on Wednesday.
Thursday is a scheduled day-off, giving the young Blues a chance to experience the sights and culture of the surroundings. The Everton party will also be taking a session with local coaches.
The final days see the 12 teams participate in the play-off stages, with every side having five games in total during the week.
Other clubs in the competition include defending champions Clube Atletico Mineiro (Brazil), Sporting Lisbon (Portugal), Young Zebras FC (Botswana), Bridge FC (Nigeria), CLub Tijuana (Mexico), K-Stars (Zambia), SAFA Sedibeng, SuperSport United and University of Pretoria (all South Africa).
What a goal!
Damn me being in work and missing this, sounded boss.
This is also another reason why I think Moyes will stay. He's said it before in interviews that he'd be gutted to see someone else get the fruits of his labour at Everton, or walk away and see us bought out.
Moyes, meanwhile, has revealed Everton are considering becoming the latest team to join the NextGen Series, a Champions League-style competition for under-19 teams across Europe.
The Goodison outfit had to turn down an invitation to join the inaugural competition last year, which was won by Inter Milan with Aston Villa defeating Chelsea in this season’s final in Como on Monday.
And Moyes said: “Both (head of Academy) Alan Irvine and I are very keen to keep developing our Academy and we are considering joining the NextGen Series, which we were invited into when it first started.
“We didn’t feel we had the numbers to be able to cope with more games but it’s something that I would be keen for us to get involved with in the future.
“The experience of European games would be helpful in the development of the young players.”
From next season UEFA are starting their own U19 Champions League (after getting pissy at being swerved by the Next-Gen organisers) They're inviting all CL qualifiers to send an U19 team to the UEFA tournament, so depending on what they decide, the Next-Gen tournament could turn into a 'Europa League' -esque standard of tournament. If it decides to stick around at all.
But with that said... any exposure to European football for our U18 lads is beneficial and i'm sure non-CL teams from Italy, Spain, Germany etc will give them a good test.
