Yes, we get that teams sometimes play it, now and again, but its a formation thats hardly used in the modern game, surely you can admit that?

Man City played it today.

Hart

Zabaleta
Kompany
Lescott
Clichy

Silva
Garcia
Yaya Toure
Sinclair

Dzeko
Aguero

Even when Dzeko came off it was a straight swap for Tevez and they played with two up top. It's a complete myth that it's no longer in the game. It's up there with the "Beckham going on loan to Preston made him great" myth.

Pretty much everyone plays with a lone central striker flanked by two wide men and with a man in the hole. Whether that's 4-4-2, 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 depends largley on what players you have in the different positions. You put Rooney in Fellaini's position and the same set up becomes a 4-4-2 simply because a striker in that area of the pitch acts differently to a midfielder there.

Agree, but there's a difference between a "false 9" (hate that term...) and a traditional attacking midfielder in those systems. So it'd be false to say those formations are identical. The difference is that an AMC (like Lampard) will look to get in behind a defence, playing off the striker. Whilst a false 9 will drift, look to pick up possession and lay in to the striker/wide players as a creator.

So Rooney wouldn't play the same role as Fellaini, and as such the system is very different.

But your overall point is right like.

But seriously, whats wrong with the 4-2-3-1 formation we are playing now. The players seem suited to it and are playing great football, why change a winning formation? Plus 4-4-2 is a massively gash formation. Whenever Everton have played it we have gotten overun in midfield, every time. 4-4-2 just doesnt suit us.

Everton don't do 4-4-2.

Thank god!

As said our current formation is working great... Same as last year's just better personel and maybe tweaked here and there. Lets just hope we can bring in a CM player in January aswell as maybe bringing back a certain youngster who has developed his game.

What I thought was more or less that by playing both Anichebe and Jelavic up front we could move Fellaini further down and solve our Neville problem.

More than anything, we´d be swapping Neville for Fella and letting Anichebe play where Fellaini is playing now.

Obviously, the big drawback is that Anichebe won´t be able to take part in midfield play the same way Fellaini does, but Victor isn´t half bad at holding the ball up so it could still work out nicely.

Spurs
City
Arse

All play with 4

Spurs only play one up top usually don't they?

same with Arsenal.

442 is for long ball/back to front teams quick teams. It is an option for us when we are chasing games but 451 and controlling games is the way forward with our current squad. 442 would see Baines, Mirallas, SP and Coleman (at full back) given more defensive responsibility - not good, they look great atm.

I'm sorry mate but I just don't agree or see any logic to this at all...

Solving the nev problem and creating a worse problem by taking away fellaini to replace with Vic is ludicrous. Anichebe is NO number 10, he's a back up lone striker. If we had Rooney for example fine move fell back and play Rooney no 10 but we ain't got that him. Fell is causing havoc setting up goals and scoring.
The down side at the moment is nev in CM. Gibson will be back soon
