As at June 12th 2009, no decision regarding the Title Holder spot had been officially communicated by UEFA, however a report that day in the Liverpool Daily Post, the morning newspaper in the UK city of Liverpool, where Everton F.C. are based, strongly indicated that the Merseyside club will not be entered directly into the Play-off round. The newspaper quoted the Everton F.C. secretary as saying that the club had been informed on June 11th 2009 that it would have to encounter the Play-off round.

I am getting confused here!

ahhh, it's stupid the way we have got to play 1 qualifying round and so do Fulham, surely they must have to play more than us and seriously hope we don't get a decent team

Fulham have one extra round to get through. They are due to play a two legged Third Qualifying Round on July 30-August 6. I still despise all at UEFA though.

judging by some of the attitudes towards the draw, i think we all haven't quite shaken off our last few european dissapointments. how can we expect the players to move on if we still haven't

sure i'm hoping for an easy draw, but i think our team can really win the tournament, we have as good a chance as any other team. i don't want to face villarreal or valencia early on, but i say if we do then they're the ones that should be worried. we should have beat villarreal the first time around, and every blue should be salivating at the chance for a collina-free rematch.

i don't care who we play i just can't ******* wait for the games to start, look out europe the cup is ours!

I believe we can actually win this Europa League mate, but that does not alter the fact that UEFA's laws are complete nonsense. For one, they reward teams for failure, ie allowing 3rd placed Champions League Proper teams into the later stages of Europa League football. It seems unfair that a failing team should go on to win a tournament when others have progressed from the outset. Last season, we finished 5th yet had to face the Belgian Champions whereas Manchester City qualified through fair play and managed to be drawn against more favourable opponents.

right i agree the rules are absolutely ridiculous and i did believe we were screwed over last year, as they were saying liege was a tough draw when liverpool played them in the champions league, so its certainly a tough eufa cup draw.

thats in the past though, and i don't want to make excuses, bottom line imo is that we were good enough to win last year but we didn't play to our potential. i too don't understand how we have to play a qualifying round, if the team in england to qualify both through their biggest domestic cup and through the highest non-CL league finish doesn't go straight to the group stages, who the hell does?

and i also think its ridiculous that 3rd place group teams in the champions league enter the uefa cup, it shouldn't be a consolation tournament and they shouldn't get to such a late stage without having to play some kind of qualifier.

Exactly - apparently two lots of CL cast-offs go into the europa league at certain stages - devalues the competition.

Latest on the seedings.....Seeding in the Europa League 2009/2010

Just shows how much influence the "rich" club have since they get this lifeline to a title if they screw up in the group stage.
