Why do we go straight to the group stages? Does the club in the highest place in the highest ranked league take their place?

Yup. In such a case they look at the national coefficient and bumps up the best placed team in that league one round.

weren't we seeded last season?

Yes, but Standard Liege weren't since Belgium is such a small country and therefore had a very low coefficient. Basically we faced the toughest nonseeded team last season.

Why is the Uefa/Europe league so effing complicated? Is it because the amount of teams in it are ridiculous and that it also compensates for Champion League drop out teams?

Stupid.

Agreed, it's absurd. I wish we could just return to the good old days of European Cup, UEFA cup and Cup Winners Cup. It was just so straightforward. But oh, I suppose there won't be as much money in it for just a handful clubs. :@

Agreed. I'm somewhat ok with the teams that loose out in the last qualificationmatch to the groupstage in CL to be added into the European Cup, but why should the third placed team in the groupstage go into the European Cup? That is absurd.

Liverpool Daily Post.co.uk - Everton FC - Everton FC News - Everton FC to face play-off for entry into UEFA Europa League

Everton must contest a two-legged play-off round to reach the new Europa League, with ties played on August 20 and 27.

There were suggestions that Everton might be accelerated straight into the group stages of the competition because last season’s UEFA Cup winners, Shakhtar Donetsk, will not defend their title because they have qualified for next season’s Champions League.

But Everton secretary, David Harrison, confirmed yesterday that the Goodison club have been informed they will play in the play-off round.

please not brugge...

Can't get Brugge, since both Brugge and Everton are seeded. Among the nonseeded so far, my biggest fears are:

Red Star Belgrade
Genoa
Anorthosis Famagusta
Trabzonspor
Genk

Other teams that might become unseeded are:

Toulouse
Hapoel Tel-Aviv

We should beat them all, but without a few key-players (Jags, Yak & Arteta) it might be tough.:(

It won't matter who we get. Even the teams we should beat give us a run for our money when it comes to Europe.

I simply don't know why can't Europa League run a similar system to Champion League, like the Top 3 team from England, Italy & Spain goes straight into the group stage.

Why can't the 5th place team or F.A. Cup winner, from England goes straight into Group stage of Europa League?
