Europa League

I think Europe is out for this season. However, if we can get our act together, we should be able to push on next year. Spurs had Van der Vaart's goals to thank for pushing them up the league, but they seem to have dried up now. They seem to have too many players to try and keep happy. City are too defensively-minded and too over-reliant on Tevez. Chelsea are an ageing side with no width. Arsenal still have a soft-centre. United will win the league by default. Certain players have done well but the side as a whole have been pretty average. It's ripe for one of the outsiders to break into the Champion's League-chasing pack.

And Everton?

Well, we've got no money, and could well sell our best asset(s) in the summer.

I don't think we need to sell to service debt. I think that we need to sell to buy though. As I've said before Mucha, Turner, Yobo, Heitinga, Yakubu and Vaughan can go. That should bring us in around £20m. There are players available on bosmans who will help to fill out the squad, such as Nugent, Obinna and Kingson. Gueye is one at least who should be making the step up from the reserves to add further competition for places. Having an extended run in the side because of injuries with also help Osman, Bily, Beckford and Hibbert for the future. Hopefully we will have learned from this season and, if not adopting a new system, come up with a plan b at least. It's been a season full of hard lessons, but I'm optimistic that we'll be stronger for it.

I was hinting at Fellaini, too. I wouldn't be surprised to see a transfer request soon. Assuming he takes any notice of his dad.

Anyone that doesn't believe this at the moment should take the time to listen to the Followtonians podcast with "Bernie Mullin".

Amongst some very interesting (and apparently open) talk about EFC finances and future from a generally pretty pro-BK point of view (davek, if you haven't listened to it, you'll pick up enough rocks to throw until the next Millennium) comes his belief that we are a financially well-managed club breaking even when it comes to income and expenses.

However, we also need to pay down principal on the loan(s?), thus we need to develop players or to improve players enough that we make a profit on their sale to cover that repayment. (Thus, as far as I understand it, the loan interest and club running costs are covered but not loan repayment. Not anywhere near being an accountant, but I assume that is the difference between current account and capital?)

Other nuggets that are in there: the amount that he thinks BK et al would want for their shares; the total cost an investor would be looking at; confirmation that a "big American sports group" looked hard at us in the last two years and why (he says) they got turned off. The meat starts a little way into the podcast after the chat between the two presenters (sorry, lads, don't mean to knock the chat!).

I think he'll go to a club challenging for the Champions League no matter what we do. It all depends whether we can agree a new contract with him or not how soon that actually happens, I guess.

Interesting points. I don't know the ins and outs of it, but I think that we're just about keeping our heads above water at the moment. That seems to be acceptable in the short term. It doesn't seem like we're under pressure to sell off our main assets. Our debts are 30 odd million, aren't they? As I said earlier, we should be able to raise about 20 million by offloading players that we don't really want anyway.

He will be gone in the summer and thats a great shame not only because he is class but also it shows we are now a selling club thanks to our useless board. On a positive look how well we have played without fellaini this season and from january last season.

Is it 2 years left on his contract? If he won't sign again we'd have to consider selling him regardless of our financial situation. He's done the right thing by us so far, unlike Heitinga. Maybe he'll be willing to postpone his ambitions for a few years or to sign a new deal to protect us financially but on the understanding that if one of the big guns came in for him, we'd let him go.
