The Eu is far more established than the CPTPP and of course geographically we are outliers, that is obvious. China has asked to join and the USA will undoubtedly go back into the fold just to keep China out. Many more countries are seeking to join, even the EU has been rumoured, and we will now have a veto. Those wishing to join do not have to join a common currency nor a Political union, nor have laws dictated by bureaucrats in another country, it’s all about trade. As I say the CPTPP will be bigger than the EU when we formally join in mid 2023 and will grow enormously when the rest of South America and Asia seek to join. As a trade bloc it’s the future, it will become the de facto WTO replacement and we will be a key part of it…..

oh if @Daveysgingerlovechild could post this for Bruce I’d be grateful……

So, after 2 years the government have finally published their Target Operating Model for the borders.

This is now out for consultation. This document, if unchanged, will open the floodgates to lowering our food standards across the board.

They’re planning on allowing all processed products to pass, unchecked with no certification (eu requires an approved premise and veterinary sign off) straight to the supermarket shelf.

In theory, you could now have a manufacturer which puts a load of spoiled meat/fish into a tinned product and ship it to the U.K. And nobody would have any idea what was going on.

We’ve had numerous issues with Brazilian manufacturers trying this in the past, but due to the controls it was identified and stopped immediately.

No longer the case

What about additives, are they still going to be subject to the the precautionary principle, another principle like the US, or none?

The above reminded me a bit of the lad I mentioned a few pages back who jibbed his job offer because of the process and fees involved. He said he found it humiliating too.

Incidentally he still hasn’t received the refund he was promised of more than a grand. The government is giving no indication when it will be paid out and he gets charged 3 GBP just to send them an email to enquire about it lol

So for Foods Not of Animal Origin they are still undecided on how to approach; they’re focussing all the attention on Animal Origin because they have no idea about bio security and have t listened to a thing we’ve said.

Did APHA not feed into this, or is that part of the consultation ? They must be livid. Total lack of responsibility.

I'm not as surprised as you will be mate, but I didn't think they'd go this far. Additionally, implications for processors and suppliers over here will be wild, there would be no point whatsoever, especially going from protecting processors via eu tariffs.
Factor in the Corporate free states (Free Ports) that they have planned, and it will be anarchy trying to control any current/emerging issue.

We consult with APHA, as well as the FSA, who report to cabinet office. FSA back concerns at the border, APHA are only concerned live animals or non-processed animal foods.

It’s utterly baffling. IMO, which has been shared with both parties and members of the cabinet office, is that there’ll be a major food incident within the next 25 years.

At the end of this month there hopefully sharing there risk matrix in how we’ll be dealing with this, but without the EU (who audit all these premises) I can’t see how we can have a secure border
