*sigh

For the 100th time, the only way to legally claim asylum in the UK is on UK soil. If you can't get a visa to travel (which as countries are persecuting people enough for them to need to leave isn't going to happen), then they have no legal means of coming to the UK, hence why there is such a trade in people smuggling. Maybe get some of your chief executive chums to do some research on the subject.
It's odd for someone to on one hand, as Pete has, to applaud the direction of new immigration laws which 'allow those to contribute' a way into the UK yet question the right of someone to claim asylum in the 'greatest nation on Earth'.

Why would one have a greater ability to contribute than the other?

What possible objective measure is being applied that distinguishes one from the other?

For someone who likes to claim to be well informed Pete, you aren't half coming across as ignorant here. In 2019 there were around 435,000 first-time asylum claims made in the EU. Of those, 32,000 were to the UK, so an awful lot of people are choosing not to come here. Germany, Spain, and France had around 3x as many as the UK did, and even Greece had 1.5 times as many.

The numbers are irrelevant. If the U.K. descended into civil war, famine and the like, and I took my family on a boat to France, I would not then head around Europe or put them through another treacherous sea journey to get somewhere else. We’d stay in France.......

Not now you wouldn't, free movement has ended

Do me a favour. If you ever condescend to come to Liverpool, resist the temptation to 'try' to be funny. You may be hilarious in some village somewhere in England with your Field Marshall mates and financial wizards, but it's not the same here...

My friend, I was born in Liverpool and lived there for a good proportion of my life. My family, of which there are many, all live in Liverpool. Even though I now live in a little village somewhere in England, I have almost certainly spent more time in Liverpool than yourself, unless of course you’ve been there for 50 or 60 years... so do not try to pull the ‘I’m a scouser and you’re not’ on me....From what I see of you, you are a humourless bigot, probably with no friends, with an irrational hatred of England. So do me a favour, go into Liverpool and try spreading your normal bile in any pub once they open again, and we’ll see how you get on....
