TBF, there's no bigotry in naming viruses after their place of origin.
They're routinely named after place of origin.

But in the present instance calling it the Chinese Virus has been weaponized by a particular national leader as a means of creating public animosity against an outside Other, which has given "Chinese Virus" a strong racist odor. Not surprisingly, people animated against racism have called out this practice for the dogwhistle it is, and the whole imbroglio has gotten broad publicity. The result: Like it or not, if you choose to say "Chinese Virus" rather than "covid-19" or "the coronavirus" or "the pandemic," you know what buttons you're pushing and so does everybody else.

And now's about the time someone rolls in to point out the swastika's long history in Asian iconography.

I just realized I posted ^^ that ^^ in the "EU in or out" thread rather than one of the various "USA mindless shenanigans" threads, so the sentiments expressed therein may not be as immediately relevant to the British context, but it's still relevant, as social media knows no country.

It is if it's not the name of the virus, not even the common rather than scientific name for the virus, and the reason behind it is to lay blame at the door of Chinese people. No reason for calling it the Chinese Virus other than bigotry.

Only an idiot would translate it as bigotry against the whole population of a country....well done....

Why did you call it the Chinese Virus then? What was your intention behind it?

And interesting you pick up on that rather than defending your spectacularly wrong point about the economy?
