Fairly sure that isn't possible.

Didnt Cameron and Prince William lead a trade mission to China a few years back though? Like a UK/China deal or something?

Honestly dont know if an EU member can have their own trade deals with non EU countries. They must be able to. As long as the products and that comply with EU rules and regs and all that.

Can Germany do a unilateral trade deal with the UK being outside the EU? Wouldnt it have to be an EU deal?

Honest question, I havnt actually thought about it till now.

Fairly sure that isn't possible.

Mod overload, so apologies, but you are both absolutely correct - Germany can not deal unilaterally with GB. After all one of the reasons given for wanting to leave the EU was the inability to deal unilaterally whilst inside the EU. Be very strange if that only applied to us but not Germany :D

Afraid not. Those 'trade deals' aren't so much trade deals as signing off on individual things, such as the Chinese will build our nuclear power station or HS2 line. It isn't anything to do with tariffs or the like and is more in common with Prince wotsit securing dodgy deals with the Saudis for fighter jets.

I think there was/is some special Eu trade mechanism that we used to import from New Zealand avoiding the high agricultural import duty, for instance.
Re China, I think most imports have 50pc eu duty, relaxing that would probably help an independent uk economy.

Got it. Makes sense.

Been working in the sun all day, and my brain fried I think.

I know, but tbh it's a sterile argument. There is no way on earth that Germany will allow anything to get in the way of it's exports to the UK nor of its UK German owned companies exports to the EU. It isn't going to happen. Deals will be done and meanwhile we will be gearing up to take advantage of additional deals when we are finally free of the EU and the 28, now 27 country compromises......

See?

This is why we didnt actually think all this through.

Just saying the Eu and the links we have with not only trade but legislation close ties with science. And education projects so entrenched within the EU membership financial hierarchy if the governor of the bank of England advised. To remain iam sure the government of the day. Would take this advice

It will have to be an EU deal. The issue for Germany is that they have to carry the EU with them, but as they are the largest economy and effectively control the European Central Bank ( think of how they treated Italy,Greece etc), what Germany wants Germany gets, otherwise money dries up. France will do it's usual stand up show, but France and ourselves not only do trade but are bound by military treaties and nuclear treaties and they will shout but then do a deal. The rest will, as usual, do as they are told. If they don't then the EU will fall apart. Realpolitik will take control and the big lads will sort it all out.....

Unless I have missed something, thats a rather odd way of looking at it.

Like I am pretty sure the US sells more to say, Jamaica, than Jamaica sells to the US. But if the US made buying Jamaican bananas more expensive, that would probably hurt Jamaica more than it would hurt the US.

Now we are not a Jamaica, obvs, but the analogy is a sound one. I think.

If you want an analogy, then it's more accurate to say how would the USA trade with California if they were to leave, let's at least use similar economies, and of course the answer would be, sensibly.........

I so want to post a sarcastic response about this, but actually, I agree. Germany will want sell our sales reps cars, so will make sure they can do.

I was alluding to the balance of economic power, not the politics of leaving.

But yes, all deals will be conducted sensibly.

We are their biggest car market, they have 700,000 people dependent on it, they have a massive trade surplus with the UK, Germany will force a deal........just as we would in the same circumstances. Forget the bods running the EU, they are hired help, Merkel knows that her future depends upon Germany's success, she has screwed up immigration and if she were to screw up trade with the UK, then piano wire and lampposts comes to mind.........

Japanese company bought a hi tech uk firm out to double the job numbers in the UK today because the lower £ against the dollar hope it's signs of us loosing the EU shackles the firm buying stated Brexit played its part, Gideon seems to have got this wrong!
