It is a fact, irrespective of who is to blame and we should prioritise British citizens over immigrants, yes.

Merkel encouraging mass immigration is obviously a major factor so yes, the EU does shoulder much (but not all) of the blame.

She made a complete prat of herself and caused major problems for every other EU country with her open door policy.

I would have had no problem with her flying every single person looking for asylum direct to Germany and looking after them. That would have been very worthy and may even have generated similar responses from other countries who have a population problem. But to drop all of the en route countries into the mire, without them having either a vote or a say in the matter, was an absolute disgrace.......

It also applies on a national level. If you take it to the extreme, we will soon not be in a position to look after ourselves, never mind immigrants. If you look a bit deeper into the meaning you may get past the superficial (but nonetheless relevant) domestic interpretation.

Seriously it does mean teaching children to be charitable in the home first and it's by hijacked since. And as for looking after ourselves, or not as you suggest, Brexit increases this risk of not being able to look after ourselves, many Brexiteers accept this some as short term, however, could be many decades as suggested by Rees Mogg et al, what are our most vulnerable supposed to do in the meantime?

And we have all said this before, we may tread water for a short while but that’s it, no disasters, no cliff edges, no people dying in the streets, which is what the author was suggesting.....

Of all the cringey Brexiter tropes, that is the cringiest.

Invariably made by comfortably off people from the higher end of middle age or into their retirement.

People whom are well enough padded against Brexit that “treading a little water for a short while” is nowt but an empty cliche because they don’t have a clue how long a “short time” is going to be.

According to one of Peter’s heroes, Mr. Jacob Rees Mogg esq,. it might take up to fifty years before any “benefits” of Brexit are felt.

That will take some form of latter day Jesus Christ act for us to tread the water that long.

So pardon me if I just lol at that smug post, Peter.

There are people in this country....hundreds of thousand of families, living week to week for whom “treading water” will be a mere prelude to going under the water when the jobs start to go and the children are going hungry.

But what do you care.....just let the devil take the hindermost, eh?

Whatever negative, short term affects, due brexit do happen (and that is by no means certain) our longer term ability to look after ourselves and others will be greatly enhanced. Taking a short term view is dangerous when, in the long term, it leads to an inability to provide for ourselves or others.

The 'jam today' policy that you appear to favour is a very dangerous path to tread.

No, just solid opinion based on fact. And please don't call me Christ.

But it seems to be a feature of Remainer thinking. When you can't counter the argument you go full on ad hominem.

Won't work!

I actually think you a full on WUM as it happens.

Getting your kicks sat in Dubai for some reason.

That's just meaningless rhetoric.
How can it be greatly enhanced if its by no means certain.

No my friend I wasn’t. Nor were all the other economic experts. Economists cannot agree on anything, are usually wrong anyway, but always fully understand events after they have happened. We’ve been hearing this doom crap since the 2016 vote...yet it never seems to appear. No doubt at some point in the future if there is an economic blip then Brexit will get the blame, just like that Jamie Oliver tried to blame his own business incompetence on Brexit.......
We haven't left yet. But I fully expect after the initial nose dive, we will right the plane and you will herald it a victory and evidence that people were wrong.

Similarly, those that will say 'see there was nothing to be worried about' with regards to things like medicines will be completely ignorant of the 18 months worth of work that people like me have done to make sure you don't have an issue.
