Brexit has been an example to me like nothing else that we are living in the postmodern world envisioned by John Baudrillard. At any other time in human history if there was an event happening in the world your reality of that event most of the time would be the narrow individual experience of someone that event directly effected. If it was a war perhaps your reality of that war was the killing of your relatives. In the modern world most people's reality of these events are delivered to them as a collection of soundbites and visual images on the TV.
If you watched news footage of the Iraq war there were probably thousands of these different collections of images and soundbites vying for your attention to convince you of their version of reality, but the average person is just going to pop on whatever news station is easiest and assume they were caught up on the news.
Some of these news stations will say they offer "unbiased coverage" but what is that exactly? Are they covering the whole Iraq war or just a few general events. Does the viewer have access to a window into the reality of the situation or just one of the thousands of narrow individual experiences of someone caught up in the event?
In our current world this problem has become worse, a person today can select a view of reality as they believe it to be from hundereds of thousands of options and with the internet can easily look up information reinforcing their view.
Imagine 2 people meet on tinder and one of them presents a photograph of themselves 20 years younger than they actually are. From this point forward that person begins to live in what's essentially an entirely new simulated reality the person that received the photo has received a piece of media that informs their understanding of the world and that piece of media is not an accurate representation of reality because it's 20 years old. From the point of view of that person they live every day of their lives, maybe even the rest of their lives if they never meet them, believing that the information they have received is real just as many people today live each day of their lives believing that the information they heard on the news is them viewing reality.
Ordinarily when the rubber meets the road and the 2 people on tinder actually meet the person fooled would walk away betrayed, resolving to take more care in what they believe and maybe even thinking to get their information on something from multiple sources so that their view of reality is more informed.
It seems though that many people no longer make a distinction between a simulated world and the real world and many people when confronted with the truth would rather stick to their idea of what they believe reality to be. This has lead to a bizarre situation where brexiters, now faced with their tinder date not being as appetising as they believed, are now furiously trying to construct AR goggles to try and make their idea of what their date should look like real instead of doing what I would consider the rational thing and walking away deciding in future to better research their view of the world.
