I've never understood NI.. But all this is mind boggling...

The dup rule but the people want to remain by a large margin??

How so?!
The DUP are as right wing as it is possible, anti Gay, pro military enforced Orange Orange order matches in Catholic areas and no respect for the Irish language. A time machine must surely have been involved in their inception.

They have blind devotion to what London decrees even though it may damage their own constitutional position. They see themselves now as vanguards for the Union whereas Uncle Gerry applauds them as facilitators to unification.

They are Frank and Uncle Gerry loves it.

DUP vote for deal that will guarantee a downturn for North of Ireland. Blind devotion to the London Mothrship.

Brexit was on Gerry’s Santa list!
And this is the whole point Ard Mhacha. It is economic and political suicide on their part and for the first time in their history I don't think even their own constituency will forgive them if it happens.

We're on the one road...

We have no government in Belfast. Regrettable yes, but they were so utterly useless they aren't missed. They are unlikely to come back any time soon. But they are still of course getting paid....

The DUP support brexit. It was only constituencies they hold that voted leave. The entire NI leave vote is not far off a DUP vote.

The DUP definitely do not rule lol

They are just in a position which leaves them as crucial numerically for the minority tory government. If there was a majority government then they would be pretty insignificant with only 9 or 10 seats. They are maximising their influence as May needs them. Just like any other party in a similar situation would do.

Sinn Fein support remain. But yes, as you've been told, some of the older members never supported the European project. Eg SF did not support the Lisbon treaty in ROI. Republicans traditionally were a bit eurosceptic until more recent times.

The overall NI remain vote was just over 60%. Although it was a UK wide referendum so I think that point is overplayed a little. The border areas naturally were strongly remain. There is concern over the border issue.

The issue of NI politics is very much one of identity. It's less about what you want from your government, and more about how you feel and what you feel. It's difficult to explain but people overwhelmingly tend to vote based on their background. That's unlikely to change soon.

There's also about 500 years of history to throw into the mix. Good luck with getting your head round all of it lol

Thanks for the info

Round Waterloo was rammed with people today. I completely forgot about the march and arranged to meet my sister there.

Anyway we had a nice couple of pints and everyone seemed like they had a nice time. Not so much hardened and furious political protesting as face painting and flag waving with drinks to follow.

I don't think the march will have any impact on things to come but the freedom to do it should be celebrated as you would be in grave danger doing it in a lot of other countries.

Just goes to show you all those wasted years of violence that just hardened attitudes against, when all they had to do was leave them alone and give them a bit of rope and eventually they hung themselves.

Which is how I see the EU project going eventually. No need for us to have done anything, let nature take its course.
