My old fella is the usual sort of racist

"My missus couldn't get a quick appointment at the hospital due to all of the foreigners in the queue in front of her"
"So when she did get in, who who was her consultant and what were they like?"
"Ah Dr Patel, and he was brilliant with her. They respect the elderly those foreigners"

I actually had this conversation

Your Dad sounds like a sensible man who hasn't forgotten that REAL socialists opposed and voted against our joining the Common Market back in 75.;)
Virtually all deep socialists including Melenchon in France and all the left wing parties in the uk like the SWP, CPGB, PFJ (peoples front of Judea), Galloway, Skinner, John Pilger are anti EU.

I see that the debt relief deal 'agreed' for Greece last week has been kiboshed by Germany.

I'm disappointed that Scousers didn't vote to leave, just shows how many tories and Libdems are still living there........

He's like a left-wing Nigel Farage. Please. Tired of these populist rabble raisers who trot the globe getting incredibly rich whilst actually doing nothing at all about the problems they discuss. They're the political equivalent of Gary Neville.

What do you expect him to do? He was finance minister in a left wing (and I say progressive) Greek government that had been democratically elected by the Greek people. The leader of that government was coerced (or perhaps bullied) into accepting what Yanis felt was a ridiculous and unhelpful financial settlement/plan by the EU. Yanis did not agree with accepting the plan (what he calls "fiscal waterboarding") so had no real option but to resign from government. Yes he's got a book out and is currently doing the rounds publicising it but to me his input into the EU and their dealings is a very useful one and confirms me in my opinions about them that they are both practically and personally in their dealings a pretty unedifying lot...

The Greeks got ride of him because he was all bluster and had even less grounding in reality than Syreza did. The comparison with an act of torture is utterly absurd. What's more, how often do you hear him talking about the criminal state of government in Greece for the past few decades? Or perhaps the way his country fiddled the books to gain entry into the Euro? I've read his book, and it doesn't even get a mention.

He's a populist and borrows from the exact same playbook of all the others who love to hark from the sidelines, talking an amazing game without ever having to get their hands dirty actually doing something.

Well I don't necessarily agree with you but that's ok. But what do expect him to do? Start another left wing party in Greece and stand for election based on that?

Good you've read his book. You really do do your research for this forum ;)

There are plenty of ways he can do things that don't even involve being a highly paid celebrity who does about as much real work as the Kardashians. Real man of the people he is.

Long wait at the airport yesterday wasn't completely wasted ;)

I guess if not a champagne socialist he is a bit of an "expensive leather jacket, expensive motorcycle, mix in high circles" kind of socialist!

Juncker sharpening the knives already, that man is a grade A tit.

I can see why we can't get a good deal as it would mean the end of the EU, but surely by doing a deal (or no deal) that negatively effects jobs and businesses inside their union undermines the whole point in having a union in the first place!
