Interesting article on the unpredictable societal and global knock-on effects of climate change, outside of the obvious environmental damage it will wreak.

Unfortunately, unless the whole world gets behind this, we are screwed. China and India, and indeed America are spewing out so much crap that our re-use of plastics, different coloured bins, hairshirt energy policies etc, will have the most minimal effect upon the planet. At least we will die in penury knowing that we did the right thing…….

Agreed. There is not much the individual can do at this rate. We need global cooperation on a scale which we have never even come close to achieving, and for corporations and big business to be reined in dramatically. Marginal gains won't cut it at this rate, and we can't even make those

Unless the big polluters are on board, nothing will change. We will feel smug and good about ourselves while driving our economy into the dirt…..

Being a little condescending to anyone who is doing their own small thing to help Pete. I'd still encourage anyone to try and live better and cleaner lives where they can, there's certainly no harm and basic human decency is still a valuable thing.

But the actors you have rightfully pointed out are mostly responsible for this crisis are simply beyond our control and wield way too much power and influence. This is at their door, nobody else's

I‘ve always believed we should all do our little bit to keep the planet, land sea and air clean. The little bits do add up. But the countries I’ve mentioned are just ignoring today and pursuing an economic advantage. China more than anyone treats the planet as a wastebin. Even their space vehicles are allowed to just drop back anywhere on the planet, or the moon…..

As I say, we're in almost total agreement. Just didn't agree with the sideswipe at individuals who are doing what little they can on a personal level

Per person the US is twice as polluting.

We can still lead the way in creating a sustainable environment and model that other countries can follow. Largely pissing in the wind but is preferable to wearing a nappy.

all that carbon rubbish thrown at us- `carbon footprint` -`carbon neutral` etc etc remember that old saying `blind you with science` thats what i think is happening and we`re being scarred into believing the solution is more taxes and the limiting of personal choice.
you have made it abundantly clear you don't want to pay more taxes to fix it, I get that.

What I am asking you about though, is the cause. Do you believe the science that says humans are responsible for climate change?

ok- basically i don`t believe the causes of `global warming` that are published. a few reasons- all their graphs and models have been debunked, from the scare stories in the 1990s to the `hockey stick` thing. obviously breathing carbon-monoxide isn`t good but while mega-corporations are poisoning nearly everything in sight, the government/media point the finger elsewhere. look up Earth-ships and their background, it was an off grid community so the utility companies lobbied the senate to kibosh all their plans. did you look-up `urban heat islands`? obviously mankind in such numbers is having an effect on the planet but i believe its miniscule. stopping the destruction of natural habitats is something we could all be involved in at a local level whether its Sefton Park meadows or Rimrose Valley nature reserve. so, i don`t believe carbon emissions are the problem.
