Not the most practical though?

And the cost of wood has narrowed the economical gap. Here, what was £95 for a dumpy bag the other year is £155 now. It'll cost more to heat a kettle now with fire/wood than it would to use electric.

What do you use to heat water in the summer? If immersion/electric to heat a water tank then it'll average out as being worse than a gas boiler, IMO.

I moved house June 2021. The property I moved in had a Rayburn for hot water and heating - it absolutely devoured Oil. It broke/while replacing it with a system boiler, I had last winter having to use immersion for a water tank, the cost was insane compared to what I was using for gas boiler a few months before. That's why I miss gas - it's a lot cheaper than oil, and massively cheaper than electric for heat+heating water.
Smokeless coal purchased by the ton from a coal merchant is about £450.00 which with a few logs sees me through a winter .....plus the open fire The Dunsley -http://dunsleyheat.co.uk/stoves.html

£446 for 500 litres of oil to top up a 1800 litre tank. It was 80p, now £1+
£115 for 250kg of decent coal.
£620 for 4 dumpy bags of logs.

£1,181. For heat and hot water to get through winter.

The oven is electric, that's separate.

My gas bill prior moving in June 2021 used to be £60 odd quid a month and that included the oven lol

Gas is going up 180% coal this year 20%....

Shame can't get a shower with coal!

How do you heat your water in summer? Is your property able to use gas?
I can as it heats all the hot water system & the central heating..... it would not be worth installing if it did not do that - i paid £1000 in 1987, so as a guess it must cost about 5 -6 grand now .....

You use coal/wood in the summer to heat water? Do you just turn the radiators off then?

Isn't that a lot of expense for just hot water though?

Reason I ask is most who have a Rayburn etc alternative non-gas forms of energy rely on immersion/electric for watertank when it's not winter but even that costs a lot.

Just found a photo of our fire still in production - thinking of inflaton it may cost a coal board approved fitter with inflation 6-8 grand to put it in with a hot water central heating system now - back in 1987 in was a £1000 - which we added to our mortgage a very good investment as in my early days I got my wood free.....

Can you clarify how much wood you get in a dumpy bag?

We have a log burner and just took delivery of our ash logs for this winter. £65 for half of a pickup truck load.

It'll vary mate depending on supplier.

The ones I like are;

"Our bulk bags measure 85 x 85 x 85 cm when empty.
We overfill the bags with a measured amount of .8m3 loose volume. The bags when full stretch and bulge to 1m in width, so allow just over 1 meter for storage and access"

Tried loads before, you can get cheaper wood but a lot is a false economy. Prefer kiln dried.

When I've had pickup truck loads from a few suppliers it's always been less value, and the logs a bit hit and miss.
