Arguably the most influential economist of the 20th century is, understandably, held to a higher level of scrutiny than your soon-to-be brother in law. Voting for Trump doesn’t make someone scum; I sympathise with Americans, as both choices were disastrous. Personally, I believe Kamala was the lesser of two evils, but Americans disagreed, maybe if I lived in the US my POV would've been different, know knows.

Being born in Liverpool though has directly shaped my perspective on free-market economics. The city was left to the whims of the market and deteriorated for over 30 years due to the neoliberal policies that began under Thatcher, which were heavily influenced by the economic ideas of Friedman and Hayek.

Friedman’s overall philosophy was rooted in promoting a system where free markets could flourish with as little interference from the state as possible, to supposedly benefit society as a whole, has it benefited society? Or mostly the wealthy and corporations? Like the water companies pumping 💩 into our rivers, or the failing foreign owned railway companies?
My point is that the likes of Friedman and Hayek emerged in large part in response to the Soviet Union. Their thinking can't be removed from the cold war era in which they were forged. Whether they were right or wrong can certainly debated, but I don't think you can call them scum as I can't recall any of them advocating for society to turn on itself. Far from it, and as we're on a thread about Elon Musk, I suspect we could only dream he himself could deport himself in their manner rather than the boorish way he does.

I don’t get how people can support billionaires and corporations like sports teams. Can they really not see the way the world is going?
This is such a unique case, in that serious wealth and HNW people, especially old money, prefer to stay out of the limelight.

I'd suggest that for every Elon fan, there's three people who think/view the opposite, just less vocal, of course.

His fleeting notoriety isn't good for the status quo, and therefore I don't see it as sustainable. Yes he has fans, but too many 'normal people' are realising what's what, how they're getting a bum deal and that's due to his over saturation, IMO.

Dunno. Collect up all the billionaires and have them all compete in a no holds barred MMA fight to the death were the winner gets to keep a million then I reckon we'd all have a favourite one to support.
