ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

"You can challenge [for the top four] without spending £80m in one summer," Rodgers said. "Look at the example of Borussia Dortmund. A team that won the Champions League and then struggled financially. They went out and rebuilt and it took them four to five years to push on. Then they won the league and their European work suffered. This year you can see they have put their focus on Europe and they have lost their title. That's a team that has been growing over five years.

"Unless you have got the Manchester City or Chelsea money and just bring in £70m-£80m worth in one summer to add to a Champions League-winning group, you need a different way. I think this [Dortmund's] is the best way because you are not just looking after the team but also the club. Of course, supporters will always look at the team but for me it's bigger than that to have success. It's about all aspects of the club, so that when you do arrive you are in a strong position."

Firstly he's contradicted himself there & secondly, they've brought in £194M worth of players in the last 2 years, with £114M of that being net spend.

Piss of with the pleading poverty garbage Rodgers, your club is the 3rd highest spender in the last 5 years, having spent nearly £200M more than us!

He's merely looking to dumb down the expectation again & take pressure off himself in doing so, but they're not going to swallow it for a 2nd season - are they?

Transfer revenue: 9.196.000 £ - Transfer expenditures: 59.488.000 £ = -50.292.000 £ (liverpool)

Thats only what Brenda has spend on 7 players. Plus paying Joe Cole to leave.

This season has been their biggest net expenditure in their history. More than kkk.

Transfer revenue: 29.304.000 £ - Transfer expenditures: 23.452.000 £ = +5.852.000 £ (dortmund)

Dortmund made a profit in the last year they paid for reus with money from kagawa

Transfer revenue: 16.500.000 £ - Transfer expenditures: 19.052.000 £ = -2.552.000 £ (Everton)

And this is what we spent in comparrison.

I think they'd be wise to. I think he'll turn it around tehre but he's going to need time. It's impossible to turn a club around straight away unless you have immediate funds. Man United in the 80's is proof of that. Took them 2-3 seasons before Ferguson got them in position to win things.

His point about Chelsea and City makes sense to be fair to him

They're not poor but they're not loaded either. He'll need some time to build the team that he wants

He should swallow his pride and try to fit Carroll into his plans. The fact that he didn't even try was a mistake. How can he know unless he gives it a try?

This is LFC we are talking about. The club IS rich - 3rd highest spend proves that. Rodgers has spent a lot in a short space of time too. As for 'turning the club around' you mean from on the fringes of Champions League to consistent top 4? Not a massive turn around.

It's hardly what 'Arry has to do at QPR. :)

A few things

The players he has signed have been poor to say the least, Allen,Borini and Assaidi, The jury is still out on Sturridge who everyone knew would bang a few in but how will he fair in his first full season

Given his transfer record it is very possible that he could blow any funds that hes given, I see Ashley Williams is being touted for 10m, Theres a average signing for big money if I ever seen one

The other thing about Rodgers that pisses me off is the whole "It took Ferguson ages until he got it right at Utd" line

Ferguson had already won
Scottish Premier Division (3): 1979–80, 1983–84, 1984–85
Scottish Cup (4): 1981–82, 1982–83, 1983–84, 1985–86
Scottish League Cup (1): 1985–86
UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (1): 1982–83
UEFA Super Cup (1): 1983

With Aberdeen before joining Utd, Rodgers has achieved a grand total of **** all, Oh he did once fold training bibs for the special one

haha, he's suckered you in as well mate :)

He took over a side that got to 2 cup finals & finished 8th last season - having spent over £100m in the market.

He was hardly taking on a rank outsider! He's gone on to spend another £40m net & is on the verge of achieving knack all.

I don't there was anything to 'turn around' it was merely a case of bringing in another couple of heads & getting them playing as a unit. They should be doing better than they have done this season imo.

The reason for them falling short (& the reason why he'll never get them to the top 3 or 4 imo) is his style of play. They're way too open when pressing sides who sit deep against them & they're always vunerable to a counter. A blind man could see this, but Rodgers is one dimensional & won't alter his 'style' to suit the opposition, it is that stubborness, that will ensure that he never gets them consistently producing results, whether playing well or poorly, which is what the best always do.

Brendan Rodgers believes Borussia Dortmund's success has shown it is possible for Liverpool to take "the hardest step of all" and achieve Champions League qualification without huge investment.

Unreal.

This season......

Assaidi for £3m,

Borini for £10m

Allen for £15m

Sturridge for £12m

Coutinho for £8.5m

...Klopp would piss himself laughing at that soft [Poor language removed].

I suppose to "Turn them around", would be regular CL action. No one outside of Chelsea, united ro City are going to win the league for the next 3-5 years at least, unless Arsenal actually start spending from their war chest, so that's the best he can likely hope for

It's amazing , it's all look over here don't look at that spending look at me and listen . Rodgers is like a poor magician but amazingly there are a few falling for it , to be honest though a lot of reds seem to have caught onto his rubbish

His every word is designed to get those daft buggers to accept he needs three or four years of achieving precisely sweet f.a. before he's judged...and, as you say, by and large they'll go with it as long as they're being stroked with stuff about 'the family club' and other substandard Shanklyisms.

I notice a lot of that lot are now (laughably after their club's years of spending king's ransom size budgets on players) going for this 'ultra' style 'Against Modern Football' schtick. That plays into Rodgers' hands too. He can talk that up and make it sound like he's trying to get progress against the odds of mega-spending clubs in the PL. And they'll lap it up.

I hate rs who believe they will be saving football if they won the league, as they always go on about them v the rich clubs who buy their sucess.
Madness

He's doing what he needs to do to survive in that job. Managing Liverpool when they aren't winning anything is a very unpleasant situation to be in. He's probs not going to win anything in the near future either, unless he can get a cup run in there somehow, which isn't out of the question. Kenneth managed it.

This whole 3-4 years, in combo with his continued buttering up of the fans, is clearly what he see's as his best chance of clinging to the job for the forseeable future.

Whether it will work, I don't know. It is far too soon to talk about chucking him though.

I bet though that if there's an opportunity to bring back the "saviour" in Rafael, I'm sure the Liverpool fans will take it

I've been laughing at this for five minutes solid!

He's been an utter failure so far. He's been found out in the four competitions they were in this season; and, if my eyes dont deceive me, the style of football he was insistent on playing at the outset of the season has all but been mothballed. They mix it up way more than he prescribed - and that's down to Gerrard, who's influence on that team and club is greater than his manager's.

I really dont see what that feller brings to the table other than fine words and pats on the head for the 'Liverpool family'. FSG would be much better off binning Rodgers (who's on a relatively short term contract) and getting someone like Laudrup in. The good thing is that they wont and Liverpool will go through the doldrums for years to come.
