We hardly adopted a Millwall-esque siege mentality - your "us against them" theory - under Moyes though, if that's what you mean. Its also too simplistic to generalise and assert that "we're all a bit bitter" when we're not. Theres a fair share of Evertonians who aren't that interested in the RS and don't watch them on Sky etc because basically they cant be arsed to so that doesn't translate as being unable to recognise and express that some of their players are good. Being "objective" is a two way thing surely, and it has to be expected that some Evertonians will always be reticent about eulogising over anything to do with them given that the RS go out of their way to be subjective about us and belittle us as a club from ex manager to supporters. Blinkers dont come into it.
I definitely didn’t mean to suggest as you say that “we’re all a bit bitter”, at least not in a negative way - every clubs fans are bitter to an extent, us no more than any others so apologies if it came across that way. Hell I’m bitter towards Leicester more than anyone else in recent years as there’s no reason that shouldn’t have been us capitalising that season.
In this case however we’re not talking about general fans, I’m talking about a specific section of our fanbase. There’s a huge difference between “eulogising” and simply recognising a good football player. Yet if you don’t agree that said player is garbage you get accused of being a kopite- how is that productive or sensible? The fact is that if some blues don’t watch anything RS related that’s perfectly understandable and absolutely fine. But for the blues who come in here and pass comment and give their opinion as if it’s gospel then in just like any other thread on this forum they should be prepared for differing opinions.
That’s where my comment surrounding this “us against them vibe” stems from. I think some people imagine that they’ll burst into flames if they even acknowledge a decent player in red, or that their soul will be tarnished forever (it might be but who knows). The same people (and if you’re on Twitter, then you can’t deny that their were many of them) where the ones who in the summer where proclaiming that “kopite heads were falling off” as we went about our summer spending- all before we’d even kicked a ball people were desperate to prove a point to our neighbours and in doing so where defining our business in relation to how another club’s fans were reacting.
Some of my RS friends are actually a lot sounder than RS family members I have who are really enjoying sticking the boot in at the moment. What do I do? I laugh it off and I ignore them. It doesn’t mean that I can’t be objective and honest in my assessment of purely footballing matters. Long term for our club more objectivity wouldn’t be a bad thing.
