Hodgson has been short of firepower up front since Daniel Sturridge injured a thigh in training at St George’s Park after playing against Norway in early September. He broke down again when he returned to training with Liverpool in October when he suffered a calf strain.

Hodgson said he had left a message for Brendan Rodgers about Sturridge’s fitness, but that he had not heard back.
“That was never realistic possibility,” the 67-year-old said of the striker’s inclusion. “He’s still recovering from the calf injury he picked up. It’s unfortunate. We were hoping, of course, to get him back, but it hasn’t worked out.

“Our medical staff have had contact. I’ve left a message for Brendan. The message was that it’s pretty obvious that he’s not fit, and Brendan’s not rung back to counter that he actually is.”

Hodgson turning the tables on Gnashers again.

Marvellous work by Woy.

Mr Clever has been too busy, to phone Hodgson because he has been planning the 'Miracle in Madrid'.

“In the previous weeks, so much had been said about him, the expectation had built so much, the talk had been about him leading Liverpool, his club, to a first title in over 20 years, on the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, in which his cousin had died, and then that happens. The captain, the former youth-teamer, the one-club man, a Scouser born and bred, and he was the unlucky one to make a crucial mistake.
No need for that bit.

Which brings us back to Liverpool. As they continue to struggle at the back, particularly from set pieces, there’s been much grumbling about individuals in the back four. But Dejan Lovren isn’t a bad defender; he was excellent at Southampton last season. Martin Skrtel may be getting on, but he was a rock under Rafael Benitez. Mamadou Sakho may have been overhyped, but he’s still an imposing player and regular feature in the France squad. Kolo Toure may suffer lapses on concentration, but he’s still a more than adequate reserve centre-back.

If they’re all finding life difficult, then maybe the issue isn’t personnel but the system.

Phil Jagielka and Gary Cahill, it can also be said, have looked far more composed since August than they did during the World Cup, which perhaps offers the biggest clue as to the issue: if central midfield consists of Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson, the defence is going to come under pressure. Therefore, with Lucas Leiva and Emre Can at the base of midfield supported by Joe Allen, perhaps it is no coincidence that Liverpool produced their most convincing defensive display in some time.

Only Rodgers actually knows what the motivation behind his team selection at the Bernabeu was, but whatever his thinking, he may have gained a valuable insight into the combinations that can give his side an additional resilience.

I see one of the Yank owners Werner is over at Melwood today....plenty of damage limitation photos of the players training laughing in high jinks. Hes obviously also bought into the RS trend for club executives dressing up in the club gear.....remember Rick Parry and co

Laughed my head off when I heard this on R5 earlier. Well in Roy.

Mr Clever is trying desperately to cover his backside over the Miracle in Madrid, and save Stevie me's blushes that 'he was dropped'. On SSN he said that he rested Gerrard due to injury concerns. Odd that, seeing that he said this on Wednesday, "Rodgers insisted Steven Gerrard had no problem with being made a substitute and revealed he had told the Liverpool captain a week ago he intended to leave him out of the game here". So Mr Clever knew that Gerrard would be injured a week before a game. Now that is weirdly clever.

If that's what passes as their most convincing defensive display in some time I would hate to have seen their worst....

No, wait.....I would have loved to have seen it

But for a bit if bad luck and a lot of bad finishing, Real would have run up three, four or even five the other night lol

But I am loving the fact this glorious 0-1 victory has put them back on the warpath and that Kolo Toure is the dog's bollox now ;)

they're marching on together, coming up over the hill or something, riding at dawn too I believe

This could well be Brent's "Anfield" moment.

When Moyes took it upon himself to decide the derby was a meaningless fixture and sent out a less than full strength team in the midweek of the Sunderland cup tie most fans, whilst shocked at the decision and stunned by both the performance and the result, held fire until we saw what panned out on the Saturday.

To see if the humiliation of the Tuesday could be expunged by a powerful display and victory in the Cup tie.

That game turned out to be a scrappy draw and from that moment onwards Moyes had lost a critical mass of fans.

That night at Anfield is now infamous in Everton folklore.

The cultists are putting a gloss on last nights surrender in Madrid in the hope that it all goes well at the weekend.

If Jose schools the bugger again, RAWK will be one bitter bearpit for Brent come Saturday evening.

If I remember right, after the 3-0 Johnson Derby, Benitez admitted he made a mistake in fielding a weakened team. Brenda will never do that (admit the mistake)

He's in a hole and he's still digging.

He talked himself into trouble by shouting his mouth off that the players deserved their chance before the game because the ones who'd been dropped had been poor. Clearly he never expected to keep the score down to only 1-0 (you could see from his bristling reaction afterwards) and now he's either got to go back on his word and drop the players who performed better than expected against Chelsea knowing their the weaker team or concoct some obvious BS excuse when he brings the likes of Gerrard, Henderson, Sterling etc etc back for Saturday.

He's starting his excuses early but he's just going to make a bigger [swear word] of himself again.
