......I'm confused, I recall BR saying they weren't a one man team but now he's saying they are in transition following Suarez's departure.

Liverpool v Southampton: Bullish Brendan Rodgers relishing life after Luis Suárez
16 August 2014

When asked if Luis Suárez be missed at Anfield, Brendan Rodgers replied: "No, not really"

But a campaign, also, in the PL - Post-Luis - era after the striker's £75  million move to Barcelona. And Rodgers is adamant that not only are Liverpool more than just the Uruguayan but are in a far healthier position than, to draw an obvious parallel, Tottenham Hotspur last season when they sold Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a world-record £85 million and used the money to recruit heavily.

"It's totally different," Rodgers insists. "You put into context the whole case because we've gone into the Champions League for the first time since 2009. We had a terrific season - but the depth of our squad, everyone here will know, was frighteningly shallow. So we needed to improve the quality but the net spend is very small. It was part of the vision and strategy of the club in terms of what we were trying to do."

And neither have Liverpool overhauled their starting XI in the way Spurs attempted. "It's not as if we're bringing them straight into the team," Rodgers says of the club's eight new signings. "They're young players - 20, 21, 22 - who we hope will be here for a long time.

"We'll distribute quite a few of those into the team but it will be done over the course of a process and over quite a long time. We've still got our core. It's not a new team, it's an evolving team. It's a totally different scenario [compared to Spurs]. We are clear in our identity of how we play and how we work. The guys from last year will be here and we've added some exciting talents."

But, and here is the nub, will Suárez be missed? "No, not really," Rodgers replies. "I think we had a star player who was part of the collective. Luis had a great talent but the team was the important thing for us and it had to be. We nearly won the league last year with 12 to 13 players. Obviously Luis contributed 31 of those goals but we still had 70 from elsewhere. It was very much about the team and the creativity and work-rate. But he is a fantastic player."

So suddenly Suarez wasnt so important x just a part of a collective. ..ok Brenda.

Why Liverpool won’t ‘do a Tottenham’ after Luis Suarez sale

Alas, regardless of price, Liverpool are losing a 31-goal striker, PFA and FWA Player of the Year.

However, suggestions that Liverpool could suffer in the way which Tottenham suffered in the wake of the Gareth Bale sale last summer are wide of the mark.

For one, Liverpool are in the Champions League, and therefore capable of acquiring a different level of player than Tottenham were. Secondly, the deal is being done early in the summer to allow for the transition rather than hastily sign players.

Perhaps most importantly though, Liverpool have a manager who has a clear philosophy and is signing players to suit that philosophy. All the players Liverpool are signing and being linked with play at clubs who play, or attempted to, in a similar style to Liverpool last season – high pressing, energetic and dynamic.

Tottenham signed a host of players, some without the manager’s approval if you believe some reports, and hoped they could mould them into a team.

Liverpool are doing the opposite – signing players to fit the style they already have.

Brendan Rodgers laughs off Sam Allardyce's claim he is stuck in his ways

Liverpool FC boss Brendan Rodgers has laughed off Sam Allardyce’s claims he is a manager stuck in his ways.

Allardyce last week suggested Rodgers was similar to Manuel Pellegrini and Arsene Wenger in that he refuses to be flexible with his tactics.

Rodgers adds: “When you say not change, I’m not sure there’s a coach that has played more systems than I have played in the last couple of years.

“The principles stay the same, but the systems change. We played a different system the other night (v Swansea) and it brought us a win.

“People will look at me and think I have an identity. I’m happy with that.

“But no, as a coach you have to be able to adapt and change.

“I’m not dogmatic as a coach, I’m pragmatic.”

Does he mean there are six envelopes this year?

Absolutely superb that. Gets better with time. It's the closest Gerrard ever got to the title - the defining moment in his league career. An appalling return on a 16 year career with a club that's been 2nd/3rd highest spenders in the league over that period.

He has to look back and ponder why Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City, Man United all won it more than once and he has a couple of runners up campaigns to look back on. That must be a bitter pill to swallow. Never in a million years can he be spoken of in a PL all time top 10. You have to achieve in order to secure a place amongst that lot.

The statement from that belter yesterday:

"We've lost 80% of our goals since last season...the player who isn't here anymore and Daniel".

After spending £130M in the summer. No wonder the cult are starting to reach for their pitchforks.

Someone yesterday argued with me that Gerrard defined Liverpool. I completely agreed.

Plenty of talent that was never fully realised, always reaching for a pinnacle that is out of reach, inflated reputation built on moments in a plethora of mediocrity. Slip ups that define seasons.

Yeah. He does.
