I think the reality is that they're so hilariously insecure about their diminishing status they felt compelled to bring in a 'name' to replace Suarez. Turns out the likes of Falcao and Reus weren't interested and Balotelli was the only option. It was desperate and thoughtless: the guy was never going to be what they needed, and his indifference to the club so early in his stint there is just the cherry on top.
