"Give a man a fish and he will feed himself for the day, but give the man a fishing rod and he will feed himself for life."

The Carling Cup is a mere fish which quenches our immediate hunger for a trophy. Once its gone we are back to being starved of success. Qualifying for the Champions League is our fishing rod. It enables us to build finances to take on the top sides and hopefully one day build a side capable of challenging for the ultimate prize, just as we did 3 seasons ago.

No-one could have foreseen having to add an extra row to say "When our top player is injured and our top striker is needlessly banned for 10 matches".

No-one could have predicted that level of misfortune.

I think that had Gerrard, Lucas and Suarez had played every one of the 30 games we would have been challenging for the Top 3, maybe even for the lead itself.

Tell you what was needless, Suarez dropping the N-Bomb on Evra. Banning a player for 8 games for using the worst racist word there is? How awful of the FA.

Ferdinand and Vidic have played together for about 5 league games this season, yet United are the most lucky club in the world apparently. And since when was Lucas their best player?

Bad, bad tits.

to be fair, 3 players out is a massive level of misfortune for them. theyre not used to anywhere near that high a number of catastrophes. its an avalanche of injuries when you only get the odd one as is usual to them reds

A once grand ballroom that fell into disrepair, it was a location where ladies of a certain vintage relived their golden days, throwing on the lipstick for one more shot at rapture alongside a fresh generation. Every now and again they would strike lucky too, as visitors in awe of the sheer novelty value of the 'grab a granny nights’ succumbed to its particular charms.

In so many ways, Liverpool Football Club have something in common with the ladies of The Grafton.

They are like an old lush, sat in the corner telling the world how attractive and marvellous they are, utterly affronted when anyone blind to their natural beauty suggests otherwise. Friends, lovers and acquaintances nod enthusiastically each time the club attest to their own greatness, but neutrals and rivals think their better days have long since passed.

Every so often the reminders are more potent. A magical one-night stand in Europe, or (as this season’s Carling Cup final demonstrated) an occasional trophy, but the most serious threat to Liverpool’s enduring significance is not the criticism or pity of onlookers, it is their own lack of self-awareness.

Defeat at home to a bottom-three side such as Wigan Athletic is still looked upon at Anfield as a shock, a performance which belies form or tradition. Why?
