Just shows how desperate they were, they didn't want to upset him by ignoring him or booing him. Their eyes were opened when he was being a racist or cheating, they just chose to back him.

Erm yes he would.
I can see him doing a 'handcuff' gesture before pulling his wrists apart, Hulk style, to signify the sense of enslavement and subsequent liberty he felt.
