LFC fans on facebook are ranting about how Suarez has 'destroyed the reputation of the club'.

If he had decided to stay, would the reputation not have been destroyed?

Actually Suarez didn't: it was the club and their fans defending the indefensible, just because he's their 'marquee player'. If they had stood up and done the right thing, their reputation would have been intact. It may even have benefited.
