I saw a RS after the Newcastle game and he said “at least they came and had a go “ and I asked him to clarify the score again . Slight nod of the head “yeah but …”

Obviously i get why the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal are popular in Ireland because both those clubs had a lot of Irish players over the years.

The popularity of the rs in the Irish Republic has always been peculiar to me though. The club was founded by a member of the orange order and i think their first secretary manager was an orange man as well.

They had a player from the south of Ireland a native of county Wexford called Bill Lacey who played for them from 1912 to 1924. He also played for us before going across the park.

The rs then went fifty five years without signing a player from the south of Ireland until they signed Ronnie Whelan in 1979. Is all this just one big coincidence or did the rs enforce an unofficial signing policy back in the day?

It's basically because they are glory hunters who support the RS cos its the easy option and they win most of the time.
