No I agree, just thinking of the sort of manager who will probably do well there. He will do well at Chelsea, I was reading recently it's often the year after a big spend teams tend to do well, when the players have been brought together. Werner and Kavertz are not rubbish, they are just taking a year to acclimatise and were playing under an inexperienced manager who got the gig because of who he was.
Back to FSG though, after Klopp has clearly rocked the boat in the summer, rocked the boat again in the January, then thrown them under the bus leaking articles to the press about them and also slagging them in press conferences and absolving himself in responsibility, they will want a yes man. I've worked with an American firm before, and it's a different culture and going rogue in such a way will not be responded to well. They believe their formula maximises potential, and will probably feel allowing a manager to veer from it is when it's gone wrong. Having spoken to someone a while back who has a bit of insight, that is what their conclusion was with Rodgers too. He was fine until he got himself too much leeway. Whether you think it's right or wrong, it's a conclusion that will only be re-enforced by whats happened with Klopp.
You factor in al the leeking they are doing about no money, and it's clear a period of fiscal austerity is coming to balance the overspend from Klopp. Loyalty is going to be the key thing for them come the summer, and ultimately loyalty will really only come from a much smaller name. I think there's a wider narrative here too, they are really struggling financially, especially with Biden now coming in and potentially hoiking taxes so there is a wider self preservation here. But they will know they need someone in as manager to help pacify the fans (they will not want to risk a repeat of H & G essentially losing all their money for nothing).
The curveball as you say is the fans. These are not the red sox who are happy to accept mediocrity for a few years having won a world series. They want to win the league every season, and the clamour for Gerrard is going to be enormous. He's essetnially quite a manipulative character who will know how to channel that frustration with a degree of subtlelty that is far beyond Klopp and the like. He knows all the dog whistles. Didn't he have a pop at Steve Clark for being a Catholic when he was at Kilmarnock? The guy knows his audience and how to pander to them very well.
