Fantastic that we can recruit from outside of football. Demonstrates the pull of the Premier League and Everton in particular. Also demonstrates how athletic ability is a key component alongside the technical and tactical aspects of modern football.

Very interesting appointment for the future.
This is how I see it too. And this might not be coincidence...yanks are coming

I am nervous of this appointment. I always want football people looking after the academy.

I also think a move to make the academy about athletic ability is a big mistake. We have lads like Liam Walsh currently, who are very talented but small. There does need to be a place for the primacy of footballing ability.

He is not going to be taking player coaching so the fact he comes from a non-football background is irrelevant. Celtic hired a former GAA manager to their staff a couple of years ago in a motivational coach type role.

It will be interesting to see how this develops.

.....I don't think it's about recruiting super Olympic-like athletes, it's about getting the best out of our youngsters and teaching them how to look after their bodies.

If he offers an objective opinion as to why players should,nt run off hamstring injuries in a game then it,s a step in the right direction.

Unless they have completely gone do-lally at the club I cant see a non-footballing head of the academy.

I hope something has got lost in the explanation and he is head of medicine/performance at the academy.

It really depends what the head of the academy actually does. We already have 'football people' as managers at every level of the academy including U18 and U21, but we do use analytics and data too, especially in then older ages.

Athletic ability doesn't have to mean big lumps though does it? I'd say Messi has incredible athletic ability, but it's of a very different sort to a Yaya Toure. Speed, endurance, agility and so on are all athletic abilities.

As for his non-football credentials, in cycling Team Sky have had Tim Kerrison in their backroom team for a few years now, and he came from swimming originally. It's been often said that he has been effective largely because he isn't weighed down with how things have always been done, so can approach it with a fresh pair of eyes. The team are widely regarded as the best prepared (yeah yeah) in the sport, and he's played a big role in that.

Something else to consider is that mentality seems to play a huge role in the progression from talented youth to senior first teamer. We've had so many that were in the former category before then getting carried away and not progressing as they should. That mental side would be uniform across sports, so anyone with good knowledge of that would be very valuable.

I honestly think one of the problems clubs have is using ex footballers in executive admin roles. It's utterly ludicrous and just as wrong-headed a decision as having the tea lady running drills with the players. Horses for courses.

I love this hire. I want Everton to make hire after hire like this. The more hires they make like this the more super intelligent people will want to work with the club. Honestly to someone like me the idea of leaving the smartest people in the world to come work for suntan is so ludicrous we'd never even contemplate the notion. Few more hires like this and a new CEO and all of a sudden we're getting elite talent in the boardroom as well as on the pitch.

If you complain about our crappy merchandise deal, the stadium problems etc. then you want Everton to make hires like this because all of a sudden Everton doesn't look like a dead end for ambitious career types.

Reading his background , LinkedIn etc this is an outstanding appointment for us as Academy Director and embraces a degree of forward thinking we have long missed . For me football has long been behind other sports in terms of innovation , cycling as already mentioned is the most obvious . I think he'll bring us something unique to the Academy, and we have enough skilful coaches having hands on involvement to allow him to concentrate on his admin role.
I'm puzzled as to what attracted him to us, a decent salary undoubtedly. The likelihood is the promise of more , maybe a "Performance Director " role for the whole club? He seems to be a capable administrator too with the ability to raise money and I did wonder if he's our next CEO but he doesn't appear to have the necessary commercial or financial skills.

Peter Vint - Everton's newly appointed Academy Director

Everton have announced the "pioneering" appointment of US Olympics guru Peter Vint as their new Academy boss.

Vint, who does not have a football background as either a player or coach, has been head-hunted to help take the Blues renowned academy progress from one of the most highly regarded in the English game to the best in Europe.

The Colorado-based academic is believed to have been a key figure in helping the USA to their 64-medal haul in the 2012 London Olympics.

Dr Vint's work focuses on performance analysis and working with coaches to help them and their young charges succeed.

“The reputation of Everton Football Club and its Academy is world-renowned and I am really excited about beginning my work at the club,” he said.

“The club also takes great pride in finding and developing exceptional young footballers and placing Academy graduates on a path towards our first team.

“I have been impressed with members of the club’s excellent staff and the environment the club has created for the young footballers under our care.

"What has been most compelling to me, however, and ultimately has led to my decision to join, is Everton’s genuine willingness to challenge the status quo and challenge ourselves as individuals to be even better.

Vint will be charged with helping further improve the Blues acclaimed Academy

"In the world of high performance sport, this is often said but rarely done. I am truly grateful and I am genuinely excited for this great opportunity."

Roberto Martinez believes Vint's non-footballing background and glittering CV with US Olympics makes his appointment a forward-thinking and exciting move.

He said: “This club has a long tradition of being pioneering in football and so we are genuinely excited about an appointment that is progressive in the British game, an appointment that I think will benefit our development pathway immensely.

Vint helped contribute to the US Olympic team's enormous success in 2012

“As a football club, we are committed to taking our Academy and the development of our youngsters to a new level.

"We had to be very clear on highlighting the good things we have in the system; one of the best academies in the British game, but we want to become the best in Europe.

“The way we've been consistently creating paths for youngsters to develop means we are fully aware of how good our football programme is in our Academy.

Unlike former Academy heads like Alan Irvine (pictured), American Vint's background has not been as a player or coach

"And it’s really exciting to have secured a person with the experience of Peter, someone who has always had a meticulous focus on all aspects of performance, someone who we believe will make a big contribution to our entire Academy system and someone who will improve the performance of our programme even more.

“That's not just on the players' performance, it's about helping every single member of the structure, from our coaches, to having a good relationship with the parents, who play a massive part in the development of the youngsters. He will be able to provide a highly informed picture on what the development of a young player needs.

“What Peter will bring is the extra, invaluable element of performance to allow our young players and staff to become as good as they can be in their jobs.

"But I think in this role we can all benefit by having someone who has always been focused on performance; not just players but every element of the structure; from coaches to having a good relationship with parents which is massive too."
