Current Affairs Donald Trump POS: Judgement cometh and that right soon

An interesting article on why the Dems need a better strategy in future elections. From the article...

“The Democratic Party—they always reach out to the Black community when they need the Black vote.” But the party doesn’t maintain contact after elections, failing to show people if and how their vote “moved the needle” on progress, she said.

Yes, exactly. Majority African-American counties in Alabama are places where people have to deal with open sewage running through their yards, and where as a result, easily-curable diseases otherwise found only in the very poorest parts of the developing world are widespread.

It is a certainty that this will remain the case after Doug Jones loses in 2020 - which will of course prompt the usual Party elders' bewildered gnashing of teeth over why their constituents don't bother with them any more.

It's the same thing with the DACA promise, which, as of yesterday night, has been broken. Same thing in Virginia too, where the new Democratic governor (a two-time Bush II voter) immediately signaled that he would implement the Republican Medicaid plan.

The Democrats are not a party that is actually interested in doing anything. They believe that but for Donald Trump, America is already great. And they would have been delighted to co-operate in full with any of the other 16 Republican Presidential candidates, who, Twitter aside, would of course be carrying out all the same policies as Trump.

I think this post explains it quite well - it isn't even really fair to call them cowardly, which would imply that they actually had a vision that they're too timid to pursue; the truth is that apart from performative wokeness, there's actually nothing there.

My worry with all this is the acceptance of the constant lying , it’s just become the norm. Politicians used to have to resign over lying that’s why I was relieved to see Damian green go yesterday , you lie you pay the price . A world where politicians lie with impunity is a very very dangerous one.

Green didn't go because he lied; he went because he was caught lying, there were a whole load of other questions that remain publicly unanswered (over Maltby and the whole "Ashley Madison" thing) and had put the PM at risk. Other politicians - Hunt, Davis, Boris especially and even May herself on occasion etc - tell what are at best deeply misleading statements all the time, with potentially severe consequences for this country, and escape any censure whatsoever.

Nor is it just a phenomenon of the right either; Clinton and her staff told some absolute whoppers during the election campaign (like when she collapsed when leaving that 9/11 memorial, for instance) and a record of Blair's mendacity down the years would fill several volumes.

you're absolutely right, he's inciting hatred on the basis of a complete fabrication for his and his parties own ends, it's disgusting

plausible deniability has long been a mantra politicians have lived by for too long, as you say the lie isn't important to them, it only maters if they can deny deception without be proven otherwise

That’s sort of a moot point really though mate ,to extrapolate that nobody ever gets punished for murder only for getting caught for murdering somebody . Green resigned for lying , getting caught lying if you prefer , my point still stands that it was refreshing to see even if it took a while.

Nor is it just a phenomenon of the right either

That I certainly don’t disagree with

I genuinely find it concerning , I watched something on I think John Oliver where it had spread out to other politicians. Where they simply shout fake news when faced by their lies and I think that’s a concern .

It’s like The constant hammering by trump and his surrogates of the news , fbi , judiciary and opposition it just looks like a preparation of the public for their response when the mueller decision arrives .

As a CPA, as part of my continuing education I"m required to do a certain amount of courses over a 2 year period. At the one I went to last month, this article is essentially what they told us - the tax bill was going to hurt the upper middle class more than anyone else, particularly in states with high income tax, like Illinois, Jersey, New York, etc. The media does kind of make it like poor people are worse off in the bill or somehow paying more taxes, but this isn't the case. It's that those rich enough to live a certain lifestyle would get screwed, and the biggest beneficiaries were twofold - the Super Rich, who are actually the truly wealthy people, not the grinding professional types, and corporations.

I know, I know. On the one hand why feel sorry for someone making $150,000 year? Well that amount of money isn't that much in New York or New Jersey, and sure they don't need to buy a $1 million apartment and can move to Nebraska to sell insurance. But everything is relative. The tax bill is certainly going to hurt "poor" rich people much more than any other demographic
Do find this an interesting move by Republicans, especially as their control in the House rests on quite a few districts in high tax states like NY, New Jersey and California. The “self made professional” traditionally used to be a demographic that they tried to cater to, not least because they often make political contributions.

The embrace of Trump/Bannon wing has already repulsed quite a few but those that were left often justified it on the basis of Republicans supposed fiscal responsibility whilst always making sure they got decent tax cuts. Those two thin reeds are pretty strained now - going to be interesting to see how that plays out, especially combined with at the other end of the income scale the likely cuts to Medicare/Medicaid/CHIP funding.

As Trump Rages About Immigrants, They Go to the Ivy League

Excerpt:

Ten years ago, a family arrived in the Bronx from Yaoundé, Cameroon, not speaking a word of English. This Christmas, they are celebrating a feat that would be impressive for any family: Three of the family’s five daughters have been accepted to Ivy League universities.

In a year in which our nativist president would have you believe that immigrants are, at best, a job-stealing drain and at worst, criminals, rapists and people with AIDS, these three remarkable sisters are worth paying attention to. Not just because they are inspiring — they are — but because they are far better ambassadors for this country and exponents of its ideals than the 45th president.
