Alabama’s Senate race is also about voter suppression.
https://newrepublic.com/minutes/146212/alabamas-senate-race-also-voter-suppression

There’s a lot at stake in the special election on Tuesday, but the outcome might have been determined as far back as 2013, when the Supreme Court’s gutting of the Voting Rights Act allowed the state to enforce a 2011 voter ID law that “so reeked of discrimination that state politicians didn’t bother to submit it to the federal government for approval,” as Scott Douglas put it in The New York Times today. With the preclearance requirement out of the way, the architects of the bill, who sought to undermine “Alabama’s black power structure,” finally saw their decade-long efforts pay off. Now Democrats are paying the price.

Along with the voter ID law, Alabama Republicans have closed about 200 voting precincts since 2013, shuttered 31 DMV offices across the state in disproportionately rural majority-black counties, and reformed campaign finance laws to weaken organizations that mobilize black voters. The Campaign Legal Center, a voting rights nonprofit, filed a lawsuit this summer against Alabama’s chief election official, John Merrill, for refusing to “to take any meaningful action to implement” a law passed earlier this year that extended the right to vote to thousands of residents who had been disenfranchised for low-level convictions.

Merill told HuffPost in June that he won’t spend state resources notifying “a small percentage of individuals who at some point in the past may have believed for whatever reason they were disenfranchised.” The reason they believed this, of course, being that state officials told them they were permanently barred from voting and no one has since told them otherwise.

All this is to say that black voters in Alabama have a series of hurdles to overcome to vote in tomorrow’s special election. Unfortunately, the Democratic candidate in the race, Doug Jones, has been reluctant to make his appeals to this bloc too explicit, lest he alienate Republican-leaning white voters. His main rhetorical outreach has been to reiterate his 2002 prosecution of the KKK members behind the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in 1963. As an Alabama resident told HuffPost, “He makes a big play of, ‘I defended the civil rights.’ OK, that’s all well and good. But I don’t hear anything else from you until it’s time for an election?”

In the past few weeks the Democratic Party has sent out some of it’s most prominent black lawmakers to stump for Jones, including Senator Cory Booker and civil rights icon John Lewis. We can only hope it’s enough to energize black Alabamans into voting for a party that often neglects them until the very last moment.

Trump has plans to put man on the moon again, seriously think this is brilliant , have said for a long time there's a huge generation of folks who have never witnessed it, great plan, perhaps he's going home ???

Hell of a journalist usual as well Weigl. Just presents them with ammunition.

You'd think these idiots would have learned due-dilligence by now. Isn't it Journalism 101 to check, check, and re-check your sources and information??!

Just something else to tweet forward that's too good to check. That's the mentality. It's OK if it's Trump.

Like Reagan, Trump is lucky in his enemies.

Can't stand this line of thinking.

Yes, the media has made a couple of mistakes over the last few days, but you know what, they're human. And as long as they're human, they will continue to make mistakes now and then. What you do afterwards is key. Weigl is an excellent journalist and rapidly retracted and apologised for the mistake.

It's ridiculous that the media is held to a higher standard than the fkn President. He lies on a daily basis.

Also, since Trump is SO hung up on accuracy in reporting - it's strange than he never calls out Fox for the countless items of BS they report on a daily basis... or Breitbart for that matter, who outright make up stories to suit their agenda.

Every media outlet in history has made mistakes. They'll continue to do so. Perhaps more now than at any time - that's what happens when the majority of your sources within the administration are pathological liars - sometimes even with the best intentions you're going to get bad info and run with it. Now they're all having introspective, hand wringing discussions about "we need to slow down and get things right" which is great - but do you think Fox etc do the same when they broadcast something incorrect? No. They double down. cf: Uranium One

Trump and his acolytes aren't coming after the media because they're "fake"... nor because they're biased. They're not concerned that there aren't enough conservatives writing op-eds in their pages. They are attempting to DESTROY media that is anything other than sycophantic towards them - whether that be because they're left leaning or just because they pain an accurate unbiased picture.

Their actions in coming for the free press are about power, and an attempt to control how much of the truth people know. Pure and simple.

Look at what's going on now. The big story is Weigl tweeting an inaccurate photo about CROWD SIZE AT A RALLY (let's forget about Spicer going out there and lying full bore about crowd sizes), and the President calling for him to be fired.

Firstly, POTUS calling for any employee of a non governmental company to be fired would be seen as beyond the pale in any other administration (and possibly contravenes various laws) but for it to be against a journalist is particularly terrifying.

Secondly, this was a rally where Trump told people to vote for an alleged child molester who doesn't think women or people of colour should be able to vote, thinks the abolition of slavery was a bad thing, doesn't think Muslims should be allowed to serve in congress and believes homosexuality should be punishable by law.

And now, the big story is that a reporter tweeted a bad picture of a crowd.

I get what you're saying. But my point is the fact that our lying idiot president uses/lies about fake-news all the time, so it is doubly-incumbent of the media to get their facts straight. And frankly, the occasions they've messed up were pretty silly and very easily fact-checkable (such as not checking a date on when a email was sent). Their mistakes matter more now than before because they feed into this idiotic narrative regarding a conspiracy and deep state.

I agree, and it seems like they are doing the appropriate “soul searching” to try to improve.

But it’s not a fair fight, because one side has absolutely no interest in being factually inaccurate, and they suffer no repercussions for this.

Trump’s lies don’t count, Breitbart’s lies don’t count, Hannity’s lies don’t count, Conway’s lies don’t count, Fox & Friends’ lies don’t count.

The only time inaccuracy seems to be punishable is when it comes from people who actually care about reporting the truth.

The media needs to realise that their old standby of “we’re not the story” isn’t going to work. They have been (unwillingly) MADE into part of the story. The MAGA/alt-right apparatus is set up to destroy the free press - or at very least their legitimacy.

That is one of the most important stories of recent years, and the coverage of it HAS to be adversarial because the MAGA crowd are trying to BEAT the free press.

An awful human being, would never get tired of smashing his smug right wing grid into a wall
And here's their answer to that:

...when you’re conservative woke, you’re ready to deploy the most powerful non-bullet firing weapon in your liberty-loving arsenal – your devastating capability not to give a damn what the liberals and their Conservative, Inc., cruise-shilling Benedict Arnold buddies say.

When you don’t care anymore, they got nothing.

What are these whiny weasels going to do to you anyway? Not like you? Think bad things about you? Taunt you a second time?

Look. Learn. Accept the harsh truth.

They hate you.

They hate you.

They hate you.

No matter how you try to please them, regardless of whether or not you comply with their every command, that will never change.

They hate you. Govern yourself accordingly.

Then they attach your comment above.

When the identity politics genie crawls out of the bottle, it's all about opposing the people who hate you, isn't it? It's become so tribal that the actual policies hardly matter. I know you're speaking from the heart mate, but remember that your mates aren't the only folks watching.

A cruel and clever adversary could twist your words into an anti-semitic attack before you can blink. That's the world we live in. Unless you don't care about that in the way described above. Some lurker can pull your comment, make it viral, and paint the entire site with a certain brush among those you don't and may never personally know, and the next thing all of us who waste our time in this place are pariahs.

Welcome to the future. That's how we got Roy Moore. Just another brick in the wall.

I agree, the double-standard is staggering and infuriating in terms of what Trump and his media-pals do/did/say and what others do/did/say.

nah, I just dislike racism, and religious fanatics, but keep believing he has 'destroyed' people if that makes you happy
