The FBI has arrested a contractor for allegedly printing and leaking a classified NSA document to The Intercept. It concerned a Russian military intelligence operation last year targeting local U.S. election officials.

The contractor, Reality Leigh Winner, is reportedly an Air Force Veteran who worked with Pluribus International Corporation and was assigned to a government facility in Georgia. She confirmed she printed the intel, carried it by hand, and leaked it to the press.

Why it matters: The Trump administration has been promising a crackdown on leaks for months, this could be a signal they're taking that effort seriously.

An unintended consequence is that the criminal complaint seems to at least partially confirm the legitimacy of the report, and will lead to more coverage of Russian interference in the election — something that infuriates President Trump.

That article is again is a prime example of a journo not doing his job properly.

That has nothing to do with Trump and his crackdown of leaks. First of all its an incident that's been investigated for nearly a year. The weird named contractor lady stole the information last year from a company contracted to do government type stuff. Secondly it has nothing to do with leaking of white house or administration information. I bet they haven't even started to look into their own staff leaking because finding someone who actually leaked stuff would be very embarrassing for them when it turns out to be someone well known and respected like it always is... Good sources of leaks are not the tea lady or cleaning person nor are they assistants or secretaries they are generally disgruntled middle management types or IT people haha!!

There's no way trumps team can chalk this up to a win or getting results. He is like a puppy wanting his belly rubbed every time something positive about him comes up. They need to go after his ego. Like him now claiming he was the catalyst behind the Qatar thing.

Journalists need to do better with their investigations and information gathering and then their summations in their articles.

I feel they are letting the people down not because they are "fake media" like trump claims but because a lot of the time they jump on stories without actually prepping correctly or not being able to retort on the current administrations claims as they are not prepared properly.

I did think he would be one of the weakest Presidents in recent times, but I never thought he would be this weak. This Qatar stuff is beyond mental, they are a much better ally - in every conceivable respect - than the Saudis are.

what do you think makes the Saudis so much worse than the Qataris?

there is probably no state which other world governments revile more than Qatar, despite Trump's best efforts

Don't we have like 11,000 troops in Qatar? Don't our military planes take off and land there?

My mind says we do...maybe I'm wrong?

We do and iirc those are the bases that the troops to Iraq and Afghanistan use to fly out of.

Qatar specifically is home to one of the largest U.S. military bases in the Middle East, Al Udeid Air Base, with over 11,000 U.S. and coalition service members deployed there and more than 100 aircraft. An aircraft takes off or lands at the base approximately every ten minutes, according to the Air Force.

The base is the forward headquarters for U.S. Air Forces Central Command and contains the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing and U.S. Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC). CAOC is the command and control for all U.S. and coalition air power in nearly two dozen countries, including Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.

As an ally? The main US base in the region is there, they have diplomatic contacts with everyone (which makes discreet talks a lot easier) and they aren't going to drag the US into a war against one of their (the Qatari's) enemies. Even the terrorism funding that the Saudis are so enraged by - the backing of the Muslim Brotherhood and allowing al-Jazeera to operate - is something that is in the interests of the US and the West, given that the MB are a political movement who stand for election and a free press is vital to a free society.

They have funded very dodgy people as well of course, but so has everyone else.

OK...I'm glad I wasn't making that up in my head.

This is one reason why I'm still skeptical Russian collusion with Trump himself will be found, although it is an unusual argument for a Republican senator to be making.

Yes, perhaps not with Trump personally, if for no other reason than that you'd expect him to have bragged about it now.

It does seem like there was some sort of contact with Kushner, though with whom, for what purpose, and to what extent remains to be seen. The thing to remember about Trump is that for at least a year, nobody actually thought he would win, which is why he could initially attract only the DC dimwit brigade - Flynn, Stone, Mannafort, Carter Page et al - for the most part, mental cases or hacks looking to part a fool from his money.

I could easily imagine any of them flattered into half-baked schemes with people claiming to represent Russia, though what, when and if Trump knew about this remains to be seen (apart from Flynn). After that, barring any specific legal violations, voters themselves should determine the severity of any crimes and their punishments.

But special investigations by nature tend to cover far more comprehensive ground than the scandals that prompt them - nobody can really predict at the outset what they'll uncover. And with a figure like Trump, there's inevitably an entire bouquet of liabilities and vulnerabilities beyond just Russia.
