"You as a white person can't determine what is racist"

Seems like a racist statement to me.

White man, she said.

"Racism" is an invisible force which oppresses a body of people in society, holding them back, politically, socially and economically. It is not white people who are held back by this phenomenon so I expect that Adichie means, "Who are you to tell me who is holding us back? You speak about what you do not experience."

Seems reasonable to me.

Brainwashed by cultural Marxism. It's sad to witness.

Oh, well...david lammy, kwasi kwarteng, priti patel, keith vaz....And the biggest racist of all, diane abbot - To name but five.

All racist - all of them have held me back politically, socially and economically at one time or another.

Oh, really? How do you know?

Because you are a white man, as am I. We are not held back by the force that is "Racism." We are not passed over in job interviews because we have foreign-sounding names, we are not singled out and scapegoated by the establishment, we are not criticised for being both too lazy and too hardworking etc etc...

Of course, white people can be victims of racially-motivated attacks, both verbal and physical, but when a Black lad shouts racially-motivated abuse at me it's bloody horrible and upsetting - of course - but it doesn't hold me back economically or politically. I have a better chance of being interviewed for a job than an equally-qualified black man with a foreign-sounding name. I will be better off by the time I am 50 than the equally-intelligent black man. Why is that?

Come on, it's not that hard to understand, is it?

Except I'm far more intelligent than those I mentioned.

Not singled out as lazy or scapegoated? I'll remember that next time I have to sign on (God forbid). I'll remember that the next time someone tells me that as a white man - I don't get to define what's racist and what ain't.

I hope you qualify that with "in American / Western World" - where it is true. Anyone who has lived in China as a white person, for example, will know that you can encounter some pretty horrendous racism.

I thought she did an excellent interview, really powerful, but that line was very poorly judged.

With respect, mate, you're not making much sense there. I wish you the best of luck in your life but I think her point that it's not up to the oppressor to decide if they're being oppressive is a decent one. She was reacting - in a very dignified way - to some guy saying point-blank that Trump is not racist when there is a lot of evidence to suggest that he actually is. Furthermore, if there had been an racism from Trump then the white guy was not a victim of it and so was not in any position to pronounce upon it.

Seems a fair point to me.
