Oh my goodness

From the BBC website a few minutes ago

"President Donald Trump has issued an executive order for an "impassable physical barrier" to be built along the US border with Mexico.

He also signed an action to strip funds from US cities that are sanctuaries for undocumented immigrants.

Mr Trump said in a TV interview with ABC News that Mexico would "absolutely, 100%" reimburse the US for his wall.

But Congress would have to approve funding for the structure, which is estimated to cost billions of dollars.

Building a 2,000-mile barrier along the Mexican border was one of Mr Trump's key pledges in the election campaign."

Even the GOP congressman that represents the county with the largest segment of border thinks it is daft

I don't think he cares. I read that they are estimating $8billion cost.
Hopefully Congress will not vote it through.

It's peanuts though and he's achieved what he wanted by getting everyone else to dream up better ways of controlling illegal immigration. His view on holding back federal monies to states or cities who provide safe haven to illegals will be far more contentious but equally effective.........

$8 billion is not peanuts Pete, especially as there are far more sensible ways to spent that money and achieve his goals - it is a great white elephant to his ego constructing a wall.

Withholding funds to sanctuary cities will not only adversely impact the lives of immigrants but also many US citizens as well - mostly the poor, sick, kids and elderly.

There are also very good reasons for so called "sanctuary cities", I will let that noted lily livered liberal Ridy Giuliani present the case...

I know "Executive Order 124" offends some people. They ask, "Why should we pay to provide services for illegal immigrants?" The answer is, "It's not only to protect them, but to protect the rest of society, as well." New York City is defending "Executive Order 124" in court because there are times when undocumented immigrants must have a degree of protection in order to avail themselves of crucial services. For example, parents fearful of being deported may not send their children to public schools. If they don't, a potential 60,000, 70,000, 80,000 undocumented children could remain hidden in apartments or be turned out in the streets. Not only would these children suffer irreversible damage, they could end up doing damage to the rest of society as well.

Similarly, illegal and undocumented immigrants should be able to seek medical help without the threat of being reported, possibly deported. While these people are sick, they're just as sick and just as contagious as citizens. They could possibly become a danger to public health if they were not able to seek health care services. And I'm sure everyone can understand the practicality of wanting undocumented immigrants to feel comfortable reporting criminals to the police. Reporting criminals protects all people, citizens and non-citizens alike.

Hi Bill

I've had and extraordinarily busy day and frankly I have more coming up so apologies that I can't respond in time to keep the conversation going.

Bunk? Really?

I was speaking in terms of progressive thought versus conservative thought...not in terms of party politics. The Democratic Party rightly turned it's back on the conservative South when they embraced the Civil Rights movement. Are they still paying for it today? Hell yeah they are, but it was the right thing to do. I hope you agree. I really do. I think the fact that they are still paying for that decision kind of speaks volumes though...there are folks who still believe that the Civil Rights Act was wrong. All men are created equal in America...the same constitution that gives folks the right to bear arms is the one that says that all men are equal.

Regarding immigration you are not actually being genuine. Conservatives have always railed against it. One of my best friends is an immigration attorney in the Bay Area. Her firm solely focuses on bringing in immigrants who are qualified to do jobs that the American education system simply isn't fulfilling demand. Individually she primarily works with Google. She has to jump through massive hoops to get engineers into the country to work and live. She simply can't meet the demand either because of our strict laws on the number that can enter. Frankly Americans are not meeting the demand of the tech world and immigrants are necessary for these companies to grow.

I reckon there is a much larger debate regarding entitlement in America/crap and lazy education...but that is a much larger and different discussion.

Regarding Fox...by your definition they play the identity politics game...you can't deny it...they staunchly pit Conservative thinking versus Progressive thinking. It's not even news...it's opinion...90% of the channel is focused on editorial 'journalism' that is fully focused on painting one narrative. I watch the channel frequently as it is a train wreck fear and hate that I simply can't stop watching. Their advantage is that they are the only ones pandering to conservatives. It's not in any way a legitimate source of news...it's opinion...conservative opinion. Not saying other places aren't doing the opposite.

Anyway, the Republicans were written off for dead not so long ago. If Trump continues to flat out tell bald face lies on the most petty of subjects, he will not expand his base...he will incite revolt. Revolt at the polls to keep him in check. The historic marches on Saturday will continue if he plans on trying to be a dictator who tries to filter out anyone who would oppose him. I hope you were cringing at his appearance at Langley in front of that hallowed wall. He has ignited a fire...I reckon he will fan the flames.

Lots said. Still wrong.

Sorry mate.

Lol. Owning land in New Zealand is now doomsday insurance.

Do people think it's really going to be that bad?

I don't think it's quite that bad.

I would imagine the absolute worst case scenario would be referendums to secede.

Hopefully cooler heads prevail and stop with polararizing the discussion.

There is a middle ground. That said what has happened over the last 5 days is reprehensible on almost every front by Trump. I LOL at anyone who hoped he'd change once elected

Just realizing the hypocricy of the right.

Madonna was out of bounds for sure, but Ted Nugent said just equally if not worse stuff.

Where was the outrage from the right in 2012?

Both were equally out of bounds. It would be far more productive to move away from the extremes.

Sadly we currently have an inflated Cheeto fueling the flames of division.

People. They're people mate.

No person should ever be illegal.

I agree. But the over simplicity of Trumps strategy will force a resolution or a compromise one way or the other, and that is his real end game. It may not be a great political tactic, but it's one that can be very effective......it will work for a while...
