Whatever of your impression of them, either positive or negative, they did manage to influence the politics in this country. Some of the issues they were concerned about Trump tapped into in his primary run.

When large numbers of people march, for whatever cause, politicians tend to sit up and take notice and those that don't often run into problems.
Fair comment. The Democrats now have a choice, either listen to and engage those who voted for Trump or go further left. Labour chose the latter and will be in opposition for a generation if they still exist in 20 years.

Some of those Trump voters, especially in the swing states, will have voted for Obama...and Bush a few years previous to that.

It isn't only the Dems that will need to listen to the electorate.

The Democrats are already indicating which choice they're taking. Just look at their words and actions.

Too bad too as it's a far cry from a platform of ideas but rather, nothing but screeching and screaming about losing.

But right now, it is.

The Dems are in the wilderness right now. It's up to them to move more to the center and come up with a platform of ideas that appeal to the average joe voter.

Until they do that and ditch the identity politics, they'll be the minority party for quite while, not just at the federal level, but state level as well.

See, I remember the same things said Republicans after Obama trounced them. They didn't and yet here we are...

You're trying to compare two different situations.

The Republicans lost the White House.

However...

The Democrats have lost more seats in the House, Senate, State Governors, and State Congressional levels than at any point in their history. To say that the two situations are the same is just not accurate. Obama's "legacy" is responsible for that whether you want to admit it or not.

So, if you're wanting to place your hope in a miraculous Dem comeback in two years then four, I've got some great swampland in Florida to sell you.

I guess we'll see Bill, I will admit that the democrats do face some significant issues at state level but politics is a funny old business and can change rapidly.

I also found it intriguing that of all the Republican candidates on offer, it was an elderly non politician that ran almost as much against Republican doctrine as against the Dems that succeeded.

Vive el Presidente ! Great to see The Donald trying to escape the identity politics impasse.

Imagine the alternative. The dead hand of grievance mongering and identity politics. Just imagine the downer the pant suited harridan would have been.

And what does that say about voters attitudes to the system in place?

Could you define identity politics with regards to the current state of the Democratic Party and how it differs from that of the current Republican Party?

Please be specific. I hear it all the time but nobody explains exactly what it means. I know the term started being used during the Civil Rights Movement, but I am not exactly sure what it specifically means today.

Time for a change.

From openess and transparancy to closed-mindedness and opacity?

I read somewhere the current climate of embracing of the extreme right will be the beginning of it's end when people realise they actually do the complete opposite of whatever they say.

But lets just see how the next few months play out. Good for the Aussie Dollar this Trump win though. Everytime he opens his mouth you fall and we surge.
